Mom, Dad and Aunt Jo Ann are on their way home right now from a long, but great day at UVA! Dad went in for his PET scan a little before lunch time. While he was getting his scan, Mom and Aunt Jo Ann went for a quick lunch at Roots on Main Street in Charlottesville (Mom said it was one of the best salads she has ever had!). When Dad finished his scan, he was finally able to eat some lunch and then they waited for their appointment with Dr. Martin.
Dr. Martin and her team were so impressed with how Dad looked and how active he has been throughout his course of treatments. They were also astounded by Dad's PET scan. His tumor has shrunk so much in size that it is hardly visible on the scan and none of his lymph nodes came back as reactive. That is truly the best news that we could have gotten today.
Dad has surgery scheduled for next Wednesday to take out his upper left lobe and hopefully get rid of the tumor for good. We won't know the time of his surgery until later on Tuesday. He did all of his pre-op surgery stuff today, so now all we have to do is wait and mentally prepare for next week. The plan for the surgery is for Dr. Martin to first use a camera and go in through his side to take a look at the tumor and lung. Then, she will cut an incision near his shoulder blade in his back to take out the lobe. Dad will be in the hospital for up to a week, but in all honesty, the true amount of time depends on his body and how it heals.
Thank you for all of the prayers for Dad and our family, obviously they are working. Please keep them coming! I will send out a quick update next Tuesday when we know a surgery time and I will update on Wednesday to let everyone know how things are going.
We love you all!
