Today the hospice aid was late coming to shower dad. Thankfully the shower wheelchair is here and that was easier for them.

The staff doctor came to see dad and said he wanted to start him on an antibiotic for the cough/mucous. I think he believes dad might have aspiration pneumonia. He suggested that dad no longer use straws for drinking and may eventually need thickened liquids. At this point, I disagree and think dad needs to use the straw for the small amount he is still taking in. He never seems to cough or have trouble swallowing when using the straw and I believe has a higher chance of aspirating liquid with a cup that is more difficult to control the portion. [...]

This morning before I arrived, dad told mom he was suspicious of me. She asked, "What do you mean?" He said, "Why is she here so long." Mom told him that I needed a break from work and that I wanted to check him out.[...]

Emily NP saw dad today. He says that he is not in any pain. She agreed that it might be worth a try to prescribe him scopolamine patches to reduce secretions and something to reduce stomach acid. [...]

I arrived around 8:15 so mom could go to breakfast with her Sunday school group. Dad had a small bowl of Cheerios. He continues to have a lot of mucous and loose cough and occasionally coughs to the point of vomiting. The hospice nurse Aminah arrived for a visit. She mentioned that he has not changed very much since she began seeing him two weeks ago and at times seemed improved. She will continue to make twice weekly visits until his condition deteriorates. I expressed my concern about the mucous and she said she would have Emily the staff NP visit him tomorrow. His oxygen saturation level was good. 94-96%. [...]

I met with the facility director, Chris. I expressed my concerns and told her that the care that dad was receiving was unacceptable and that we need to make some adjustments. She said that the director of nursing or her assistant would come and speak with us in the afternoon. Tim sat with dad while Amy, mom and I went to lunch and the bead store. [...]

We ate dinner in the dining room tonight. Dad ate almost all of a stuffed pepper and serving of mashed potatoes. Mom fed him. We had a frustrating evening waiting for the aids to assist him to bed. They are horrible with transfers and grab him by his pant-leg and belt instead of using the gait belt. I will need to address this ASAP with the facility staff. [...]

Dad was alert for a few hours and able to converse about work with Andy. He was able to feed himself some pulled pork sandwich and a few bites of baked beans from a small red solo cup held in his left hand. He likes coke now and had a few sips with a straw from the can. [...]

Andy and I arrived before dinner. Dad is more responsive and alert than I'd expected. He ate a few bites of Jets Pizza-was able to feed himself by hand.  He requires 100 % assistance with transfers and ADLs. [...]
