Celebration of life

My dad passed away about an hour ago, surrounded by his family.  It was peaceful when it happened and we are so grateful for the amazing help and compassion we got from his hospice workers.  We can’t even express how much all of your support has meant to our family.

I am not as eloquent as you all have been on this page but  I read this to my dad yesterday in the Hobbit and it seems apt:

“Not until then did they notice that Gandalf was missing.  So far he had come all the way with them, never saying if he was in the adventure or merely keeping them company for a while.  He had eaten most, talked most, and laughed most.  But now he simply was not there at all!”

Please feel to share your stories and memories here.  I know there will be many.

With love,

My dearest Maureen, Molly&Chuck and the kids, John and kids…I’m so very sorry, for your great loss. The quote from The Hobbit is far more than apt. David was a great man. I’ll write more later. All my love.

Molly, What a magnificent magical soul. The Hobbit quote is simply perfect. I swear we heard the trees and rivers whispering. All the love in the world.

Molly, sending love to your whole family. Today I was thinking of the holiday meals I spent at the Butlers, welcomed as so many others have been. I will never forget those days and how at-home and happy everyone always was there. Sending you peace and comfort. We were all lucky to know him.

Sending so much love to you and your family, Molly. That man’s star shined unbelievably bright!!! So many souls have been touched by his. And wild laughter shared, theater magic created, eyeball-to-eyeball deep conversations had with such kindness and ease. We will miss him here, mightily. And… may we all continue to feel The Great Reverberations of the Wonderful David Butler! xoxo

What an incredible loss! My love goes out to Maureen, Molly, and the rest of his beloved family. The theater community will never be the same without his presence, his talent, his words. We all feel the hole he has left. May he rest in peace and his soul be present among you.

Dear Molly, Your dad and I were classmates at Union in the 70s and it was a delight to reconnect here in Maine and to get to know Maureen. We shared the love of theater and I remember his and Maureen’s coming for lobster rolls and “Twelfth Night” at LL Bean’s. He was a huge presence and I shall miss his laughter and huge heart. May memories hold you in his love as you miss his bear hugs and boundless zest for life.

My heart goes out to the whole Butler clan but especially the amazing Maureen. David was a glue that brought communities together but Maureen was his equal in surrounding us with love, life and laughter. I will miss David’s spirit and generosity and I can’t wait until I can give you a huge hug Maureen. I know that David’. Lives on not only in you and your family but in all of us that we’re lucky enough to have gotten to know him. With much much love💙💙💙

Molly, the HOBBIT quote brought me to tears. It's the most eloquent thing I've read. My heart goes out to you, Chuck and the boys. I'm grateful for fond memories of post-holiday games of Catch Phrase with you and your Dad. 💗
