START HERE - Welcome to Vonda Smestad's PostHope Site

Welcome to the Mike Vander Horn support family! This site is for family and friends, old and new, to organize our efforts to support this extraordinary person. This page will serve as your home base for rallying the troops and receiving updates to support Mike Vander Horn.

Quick update first:  Mike moved down to GR the end of April and has been living with sister Vonda for the past 8 weeks.  Mike started having trouble with balance around Easter, and this has progressed to no walking right now.  Mike is very positive and never complains.  He has a great sense of humor and is still quick with his comebacks.  We named his left leg Larry and left arm Lucy as they are very Lazy! Mike has battled this brain tumor for just over four years now ...and is looking forward to his eternal home in heaven where he can be made whole.  We are currently doing a few days of respite care at Trillin Woods and will head back to Vonda's mid week.

More updates to follow.

More on this site...

Your First Step: Please take 30 seconds to click on the "Follow" button on the top right of this page. This will allow you to receive updates, read journal entries, share Horn’s story on social media, and help the family with week-to-week calendaring needs. Though not mandatory to follow Horn’s page, we encourage you to easily create an account with your name and email in order to be able to post photos, leave comments and sign up as a helping hand on the Calendar page. Feel free to upload a photo of yourself to your profile so we can get to know and recognize others on Horn’s support team. After clicking “Follow” above, read on to learn more about what you can do to help.

Journal: This tab is where you can read the latest entries posted for Mike and our support team. You may see additional authors writing updates here as well. Each post is followed by a photo and name of the author of the entry. You can reply with supportive comments to any journal entry, or click on the name of its author to send a private message.

Posts: This is where you can leave an encouraging message for Mike and family, and to read thoughts left by others! If you have something pressing you'd like suggest that everyone sees, please don't hesitate to contact us via private message so we can consider sharing it more widely in the Journal sections. There will undoubtedly be many coordinated efforts and we want to make certain they’re organized and publicized through this site to help drive the greatest possible impact.

Calendar: Please see this important section to learn what the family needs NOW. This will be an especially helpful section for locals in close proximity to Mike. This is an up-to-date calendar which will list the family's immediate needs.  If you see a need posted and can fill it, please sign up through the calendar page directly (i.e. not through private communication) to let us and others know that you've committed to that need.

Notifications: After clicking “Follow” above, you’ll then see a tab to manage “Notifications”. If you feel you’re receiving too many or too few email notifications, please check this section to tailor notifications to your areas of interest. For example, if you want to receive journal updates but not new calendar posts, or any combination of notifications from this site, you can do set them to your preference this

Horn is bigger than life! I haven’t seen him in years and years, but when I think about him all I can do is smile. I’m happy he’s in such good hands and surrounded by family and love!

I'm Mike's old manager from Spectrum Health, Mike was my first and only intern after he finished college. I haven't seen Mike much over the years, one visit in Traverse City about 10 years ago and then again at his gathering a month or two ago at Vitallies, the distance doesn't mean I haven't thought of him often, I have and do. If there is anything I can do for Mike, please let me know. I'm not much of a cook so I didn't sign up for meals but I can make time for Mike if there is anything I can help with. Always in my thoughts and prayers...

Mikey, I feel horrible about the way we went at each other at the end. However, I believe it was simply due to frustration on both of our parts. I feel sick about that but will remember the good times much more than that. We grew up together, after all. Though, in separate grades, we still had much in common. Two little kids with too much heart for our own good, battling the bullies that pushed our way too late developing bodies around. You know- the people who peaked in Junior high school. Unfortunately, we couldn't really band together either because of the different grades were in. So, we each had to do our best to survive on our own. That's the type of stuff that I will always remember. Anyway, as time went on and we both eventually began to grow, the bullies somehow magically disappeared. No apologies, no explanations, just a disappearing act! Appearantly, you handled that better than me. I'd still like to go a few rounds with one of the them! But, as the cowards they are, they play as if it never happened. Anyway, on to the present. Congrats on finishing the race! In just a short amount of time you will get to be with the Omnipotent. I'm trying my best to make it to Michigan to see you one last time but I'm having a hard time finding a last minute flight. I think I will make it there in time, but you never know. Peace out, homeboy. ---Eric Meeuwsen
