Seeking a Kidney

Hi! I'm John. I'm 36 and I live in Muskegon, MI. I like dogs, long walks on the bea...sorry, wrong site. I need a kidney.

My kidneys started failing six years ago, and I've been on dialysis almost five years.

TL, DR: If you are under 60, in relatively good health, do not have active substance abuse issues or severe mental health issues, and do not have medical conditions that preclude you from donating, you may be a suitable donor. The only way to find out is to be evaluated. (I'll tell you up-front that my blood type is O-, but don't let that dissuade you from becoming a potential donor. Transplant centers can do what's called a "paired donation," where if Patient A finds a willing donor that matches Patient B, and Patient B finds a willing donor that matches Patient A, they can do a swap. I know, it's complicated. Just trust me.)

The first step is to contact Mercy Health St. Mary's Kidney Transplant Program at 616-685-6068.

All medical expenses for kidney transplants are paid for by the transplant patient's insurance, so there's no cost to you to be evaluated. If it turns out that you're a match and you do end up donating, a) you'll have to come to Michigan, and b) you'll be off work for a couple weeks, at least. I will bend over backward to make that happen, including fundraising.

But we're not there yet. The first step is the phone call. 616-685-6068.

Try writing your info on car windows. We did it several months ago for a young woman here in Muskegon and she did receive a donor. Spread the word.
