Keeping Abreast (pun intended)

This summer I was diagnosed with breast cancer. This site will hopefully help me update close friends and family without having to tell the story over and over again.

Post Surgery Update

Hello Friends,

First, I want to thank all of you for the lovely cards, prayers and flowers! I appreciate all of you so much! Surgery took place on Tuesday. I had a radio-active seed placed before the surgery so they could locate the cancer. I found out right before I went into the operating room that I was going to be admitted to the hospital that night. The plan was always to come home after surgery but decisions were made last minute. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise. That first night was a tough one.

My parents took the kids to their hotel room and then kept them busy the next day as well. After that, they stayed by my bedside and made me laugh or kept me entertained with good stories and childhood memories. Shawn was a trooper! He took very good care of me too. He kept my ice water full and made sure I was fed and out of pain. He continues to put up with my demands even though the medications seem to make me moody.

I wanted to return to work on the 8th. The plastic surgeon would not approve that. He would like me to shoot for the 13th instead.

On the 20th, I have follow up with the breast surgeon along with initial meeting with the radiologist oncologist. I have 4 weeks of radiation to look forward to. The good news is that the breast surgeon has already called me and the biopsy she took from the breast and lymph nodes does not show any movement!  Again, I feel blessed and lucky with more good news.

People mostly want to know how I am doing physically. Well, I'm sore. I have trouble lifting my left arm and both breasts are very sore on the sides. Also, did I mention the itching???? Omg....The ITCHING! I try very hard not to scratch but dang.....I guess it helps that I am in this compression bra thing. Finally, the exhaustion is sometimes overwhelming. In my mind I think I can do something but then get tired all of the sudden.

It gets better everyday and I suspect it will just continue to get better. Thanks again for all of your support everyone!
