Assessments...

Kenna found out yesterday she will for sure need a kidney as well. The kidney team was hoping her kidneys would come back after a few weeks of dialysis but, unfortunately, that is not the case. There is no improvement. The silver lining? This could actually help her case to get the number one spot on the transplant list.  They will take a liver and kidney from the same donor. This will help her body to be less likely to reject the transplanted organs.[...]

Assessment on Monday

The last few days have been a whirlwind for Kenna. Unfortunately, her liver is continuing to decline which means they do not want to wait a few more weeks on the dialysis. The initial hope was that dialysis would encourage her liver to begin to regenerate but we are not seeing that happen. Her liver team wants her to come in Monday to begin assessment for a transplant. This assessment includes looking at how quickly this happened to her, her age, her nutrition, a psych eval, etc. Then after this has been compiled they present her case to a board (or something like that) for the number one spot on the transplant list. Then it becomes a waiting game for a liver to come along that is the right match. [...]

The last 2 weeks

Hi everyone! It’s been awhile for an update because things have been going well. Kenna has been getting into her new routine at home which consists of daily meds a couple of times a day, dialysis for 4 hours a day 3 days a week, and a weekly liver appointment with her liver team. [...]

Kenna is home!

She got to go home yesterday afternoon after her morning dialysis treatment. As long as she remains stable she will continue treatment at home.

She will still need to do dialysis 3 days a week for 4 hours each time as well as meet with her liver team once a week. During those appointments she will have her blood drawn to see if her liver has recovered at all. The hope is that her liver does some self repair which in turn will help her kidneys, or vice versa. Her kidneys or liver basically need to kick in on their own in order to help the other organ out. Her kidney doctor is giving her kidneys 6 weeks total on dialysis to make a determination on whether or not she will need a kidney transplant as well. [...]

July 17th and 18th

Kenna got out of bed and took 4 steps yesterday with PT. For someone who has been in a bed for over 9 days she sure proved how motivated she is to get her strength back! PT will work with her every day until she can safely move around by herself without help. [...]

July 15th and 16th

Yesterday was an amazing day for Kenna. They got her completely off the sedatives. She was able to communicate through writing which was huge! She was even joking around on paper with our Uncle Jay which is typical Kenna. :) [...]

July 14th

Today was a little rough. She still took steps forward but not quite like the leaps and bounds she made Wednesday and Thursday. The weaning of the sedative and ventilator is moving a little slower than we’d like but she’s making progress. We have to remind ourselves that sometimes this process can take a little longer. We have amazing ICU nurses who know what they are doing. They remind us to not be discouraged and that even the tiny steps forward are worth celebrating.[...]

July 12th

Today was another successful day! She grasped the nurse’s and my dad’s hands on command. She also opened her eyes and tried to sit up. She fell back asleep but it’s a great sign. We haven’t lowered the sedative more but she’s starting to fight it off.  We are getting closer to being able to get her off the sedative and hopefully get her extubated soon. [...]
