A fresh set of eyes....
...can make all the diffeence in the world.
Kenna has been in and out of the hospital since she was diagnosed with pneumonia a couple of months ago. She would go in due to pain in her chest, in her arms, at the insertion site of her port and the answer was always the same, ”you probably have an infection somwhere.” They would then start her on antibiotics, she would feel better, she would go home, 3-5 days later she would feel like crap again and the cycle would start all over.
The port site where they do dialysis has been causing her pain for some time. Her doctors finally decided to have it taken out and reinserted on the opposite side. To do this meant going to a kidney center separate from the hospital. This past Wednesday Kenna went to the kidney center. The doctor at this center took her old port out and discovered the line was infected pretty badly. He also had her labs drawn and was impressed with her kidney function. He believes her kidneys are beginning to come back. Instead of putting in a new line he wanted to hold off. He had her labs drawn on Thursday and Friday. So far so good - her kidneys are functioning without dialysis! Monday she will have labs drawn again and if her kidney function still looks good, no more dialysis. She will just need heavy monitoring for awhile of her kidneys.
She went from hearing from the kidney doctors at the hospital that her kidneys were never coming back to a new doctor believing the exact opposite. Due to this and a number of other factors Kenna will be switching over to University Hospital. She has her first appointment on Thursday.
Her liver has also made some major improvements. We are hopeful that with a new medical team she will have a better prognosis, and better care overall.
Thank you all for your continued love and support. It truly has made all the difference.
