Release Day

Mom has had many highs and lows over these past four weeks, but today, after 30 days in three hospitals, mom walked into the physical therapy gym and rang a bell signifying the end of her in-patient treatment. She received a standing ovation from a room full of therapists and many hugs. After that, we followed mom as she walked out of the rehab building, having put so much work into her recovery to be released two full days before her birthday.[...]

Going Strong

I'm sorry I haven't posted as often this past week. Mom has been doing great in rehab and all of her therapists are awesome. Chloe and I were there yesterday from 11-4 and watched mom do all of her workouts. I also spoke with moms dr who told me that she would begin weaning more pain meds. Today when we went, mom was much clearer-minded which was great. [...]

Stronger every day

Here are some pics from yesterday with mom. Every day I see her, she is so much stronger than before, both physically and mentally.

Today, mom walked with a cane, walked a stair stepper from a seated position and practiced getting in and out of a shower and a car. [...]

We've got a discharge date!

I'll apologize ahead of time for the lack of an update, but as much as Heather wants to post, she's come down with a stomach bug and needs to rest before maybe getting back to work tomorrow. I think we can all agree that Heather has been doing too much and not getting enough sleep, and it seems like it's finally caught up to her. Once she's feeling better and has some time I'm sure she'll post more details on what's been going on with mom over the last couple of days.[...]

Rehabilitation Day 1

Today was mom's first full day of rehabilitation and Chloe and I spent about 5 hours with her. I really liked all the staff. All the therapists seemed very engaging and truly seem to want mom to succeed and do well. Before we had gotten there, mom had had an intial Occupational Therapy (OT) meeting where they got the basic idea of what mom was able and not able to do. Mom was telling me how nice her therapist Ben was and introduced me to him. We also went outside for a bit to look at the grounds. There's a really pretty flower garden and mom enjoyed being in the sun and fresh air. After our walk, we went back inside and had lunch with her. [...]

Out of the hospital!

I talked to mom this morning and she's been getting fed up with the hospital. She can now walk on her own with a walker though not very far, but getting out of bed is the tricky part. At night she has to go to the bathroom and sets off alarms because she tries to do it on her own. She thinks the nurses are mad at her and she's probably right. That's a great sign she's ready to leave.[...]

PICC success

I was cancelled at work today as it was an extra day I had volunteered for last month and the hospital ended up not needing me so Chloe and I set off to see mom around 11 this morning. When we got to her room just after 12, it was evident that the mom I know and love was reappearing. [...]
