Little by little I am getting caught up on the timing of my entries. :)
I hit a little snafu Saturday night. I had been doing so well coming off the pump, that we decided to stop taking the anti-nausea medication a day early. Not a good idea!! Needless to say, I got some severe stomach cramps around 2am Sunday with some vomiting. Once the stomach cramps subsided, everything went back too "normal". Note to self - stay on anti-nausea medication. Its your friend!!
It is quite a balancing act managing any pain, nausea, fatigue, etc.. Taking anything for pain can increase chances of constipation which can drive nausea, then you cant sleep. Its a vicious cycle. To help combat this I will be leveraging medicinal marijuana.
I received my card in the mail from NJ State Medicinal Marijuana program , which allows me to purchase from any of the state approved dispensaries.
Benefits of Medical Marijuana (American Cancer Society)
- Increases appetite
- reduce nausea and vomiting
- reduce nerve pain
- slows down and even kills cancer cells
There are a host of other benefits that have been documented.
My experience with Marijuana other than a failed attempt in the early 90's is basically NIL!! It was pretty sad, that I had to ask my daughter who is very familiar with it after her first year a college. It can be very intimidating. After some basic research, I realized the following:
PICK A STRAIN - Indica or Sativa
The indica strain is what provides the majority of the benefits, while the sativa strain provides more of the hallucinogenic component. Most strains are a hybrid of both, so I am looking for a higher indica %. There are also different terpenes to pay attention.
Terpenes play a key role in differentiating the effects of various cannabis strains. Some terpenes promote relaxation and stress-relief, while others promote focus and acuity. Source
SMOKE, VAPE, or EAT IT
There are several ways to administer Marijuana. Everyone talks about getting their hands on some brownies or gummies. This isn't really an option in NJ, unless you make it yourself (or know someone).
- SMOKE IT - I picked up some joints and flowers to use in a pipe. I figured this is the obvious way to administer it.
- VAPE IT - According to some research, vaping is a better alternative to smoking. It limits the amount of carcinogens into the lungs. I will look in to this as a secondary option
- EAT IT - Well, this isnt much of an option right now. I am reading up on how to do this; however, the downside is it could take upwards of 2 hrs to digest and feel the affect.

I have tried it a couple times so far, and will attest to all of the benefits above. Outside of a very mild "high", my pain subsided, my appetite increased, and it relaxed me enough to take power naps.
As a change of scenery we drove down to Brigantine, NJ to stay for the week. I am feeling better each day. By the end of the week, I actually am feeling like myself again.
It feels good to get a few days away!! Enjoying the time until Round #2.....
