We just learned I have a confirmed bone marrow donor!! She’s a German woman, and I’ll acquire her blood type, XX chromosomes and who know what else on Aug. 15th. One step closer to cure! I’m overwhelmed by this gift of life from someone I will likely never meet.
How it works: First, I start in on super heavy chemo and transplant prep on Aug 7th, the donor gets her marrow (or more likely stem cells) collected in Germany, said stem cells fly to me and I get a transfusion of them into my bloodstream. As amazing as that is (science rocks!), now is when the hard part starts.
100 Days: The hardest part of all this will be the recovery and high risk of a plethora of infections and diseases. Post transplant I’ll be in the hospital for another 3 weeks, and then relocate to temporary housing w/in 1 hr of UCSF for a minimum of 100 days. My mother and Christine are going to take shifts as 24/7 caregivers during this time, and I most certainly couldn’t do this without them!
Can you help?: During this 100 days, I’m required to rent a place in San Francisco (not cheap!!). This added expense on top of being out of work and time off for Christine is daunting. It’s really hard for me to ask for help, and I am humbled and honored by your generous contributions on the PostHope site. Thank you so much for your support during this time ...every bit helps! It means more than I can put into words.
