My mom has been getting more and more therapy everyday. When the therapists are not around, we take it upon ourselves to give my mom a workout, whether it be on the hand/leg bike, standing, balancing, etc.. We wanted to share with you guys some photos, so you can see exactly how she is doing physically since a lot of you are unable to visit a lot of the time. We've gotten her on her feet many times, with her participation varying, and it seems to be helping a lot in getting her strength back and hopes up. She's verbalized her wanting to stand constantly as well, which makes us happy because she is truly working so hard to get better. Unfortunately, it takes so many people to get her on her feet, even with the rock climbing gear, so sometimes it is not even a possibility. On those days, however, there are countless other exercises that we can do with her.
We had a minor setback in the recent weeks in terms of her mobility. She had been getting increasingly more stiff, as well as the fact that she developed a UTI, so her participation was wavering. This has been treated, though, and we are waiting to take a follow-up exam to be certain that the infection has completely been cleared. To help with the stiffness in her muscles, my mom has been prescribed a new medication, one that is supposed to relax her muscles. We are ramping it up to the desired dose, and when we get there, the plan is to begin reducing her stimulants. My mom is currently working on returning to her previous state, however, we have developed a concern for her eating. Between everything that has happened, my mom has developed a fear of choking and dying, so she has been refusing to eat anything. We have been informed by Jane that this is not uncommon, and to revert back to the original soft foods we started with. Hopefully this helps with getting her all the calories and nutrients she needs, but we are in the early stages of this still, so it's difficult to tell how well it's working.
Overall, my mom is doing very well. We are still encouraging people to come visit! My mom loves visitors, and the stimulation is very good for her. We are home most days, but if you have any concerns, you are welcome to contact us.
