I'm sorry it's been awhile since I've posted an update but Kelsey is waiting for a confirmation on a new surgery date and there hasn't been a lot of news. Kels did meet with the neurosurgeon on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. Dr. Zager, like everyone one else we've dealt with at UPenn Med is excellent. He explained to Kelsey that his job is to stimulate the nerve fibers around the tumor so that they'll know where to cut in order to avoid nerve damage. The final pathology report confirmed that Kelsey has a benign schwanoma but they'll still submit the entire tumor, once it's removed, to make sure there isn't a chance for malignancy. There is also a chance that Kelsey will suffer damage to her femoral nerve which could affect walking and, if they need to leave some tumor behind, there's a possibility of radiation therapy in the future but this is such a slow growing type of tumor that they would wait to see if there was renewed growth before starting radiation therapy.
The possibilities are unsettling but as Kelsey told me, they are a heck of a lot better than a cancer diagnosis. She's handling everything well and is busy studying for finals which start this week.
When we were in the neurosurgeon's office, they mentioned that there's a Dec. 21 surgery date listed in Kelsey's file but she's been unable to confirm that with her primary surgeon. Despite the fact that Kelsey may spend Christmas in the hospital, the 21st would work well with her school schedule so we're keeping our fingers crossed that the date is real.
Thank you again to all of you for your concern and thoughts and prayers.
