On behalf of UNESCO Caribbean Office, based in Kingston Jamaica, I would like to express our deep felt condolences to Rob Lue's family and friends. In the midst of COVID-19 crisis, Rob offered to support our work in education in the Caribbean by signing up with the Global Education Coalition initiated by UNESCO. We had a consultation with Caribbean Ministries of Education and Rob's passion and commitment to help learners shone through the zoom platform. He shared with us his Jamaican origins and his generosity to help learners in the Caribbean and Jamaica touched all of us. It was evident Rob cared about his work. He loved it. And he was generous in sharing his knowledge and expertise with those most in need during the crisis. We all decided as a team, we definitely want to work with him! He connected with all of us on a human level. Being a Harvard alum myself, he was very supportive to me and smiled a big smile as we discussed how we could work together! Soon afterwards, I called his office to discuss follow up work, and I was informed he wasn't well. Even then, the message we received from his office was that he was very enthusiastic to work with us. Little did we realize Rob was grappling with a serious situation. We wish all his family, loved ones, and friends strength at this time of loss. Sending Rob a sunny smile from his Caribbean community!! Faryal Khan
I am deeply saddened to hear of Rob's passing. As someone who shares Rob's interest in education, I have long admired Rob and his great contributions in science education. Rob has been a creative and inspirational leader. He was someone who constantly thought about new and exciting ways to advance science education. Rob’s ideas were always innovative, and he had a gift of passing his enthusiasm to others. He was truly an inspirational leader. Unfortunately, this field has few people with Rob’s combination of energy, passion, and creativity. Thus, his passing is a giant loss for the entire field of science education as well as for his many friends. I will remember Rob as I had lunch with him in summer 2019 in Paris, a city that he loved. He was brimming with excitement about the future of LabXchange, his most recent effort and a project of great potential. His enthusiasm was infectious, and we both enjoyed the companionship around science education and a good meal in Paris. Rob was a wonderful individual and a rare talent. He will be missed by many. He leaves us with great memories and an amazing legacy of contributions in the science education.
It's still difficult to believe that Rob isn't around anymore. He was so full of energy, passion, ambition and talent that it seemed that nothing could stop him. He had big dreams, his enthusiasm for them was highly contagious, and he willed a lot of great innovative work into existence this way. I hope we can find ways to carry his dreams forward. I will miss the good discussions with him, the meals and drinks we had in Boston, and in Paris - I have grown up in the French capital city, but he still knew quite a few nice places I had never seen. I'll take pleasure from visiting them again in the future, remembering the good laughs and the great visions we exchanged there. Rest in peace, Rob - it is an honor to have met you.
Rob was one of the most innovative, brilliant individuals I've ever met. Working with him on projects for Macmillan the past few years, I was amazed by his constant flow of ideas. He always had a knack for coming up with solutions and concepts that were simultaneously groundbreaking and intuitive. I'm going to miss our brainstorming sessions and chats. But beyond being an innovator, Rob was quite simply a great guy. I admired his dedication to helping others learn and teach. Also, his kindness, sense of humor, and boundless energy were felt by all who knew him, and all who knew him are better for it. I certainly am. Rest in peace, Rob.
Rob was a great colleague, wonderful to work for and wonderful to work with. Brilliant, creative, and funny, dedicated to what we now call providing access to academic resources--access to education. A man with great energy, dedicated to helping others. Rob was truly a gift to Harvard, to all who knew him, and to many people around the world who didn't know him. He made a difference.
I was so terribly saddened to learn of Rob's passing. His contributions and enduring impact to the Harvard community and academia worldwide cannot be overstated. We were all privileged to know him--whether as a colleague, student, alumnus/a, friend, or family member. I had the honor to first meet Rob when he spoke before our local Harvard club in South Florida several years ago. We became good friends and worked together most recently on the emerging Lemann Program on Creativity and Entrepreneurship. I extend my personal condolences to his husband and family, to his colleagues and friends across Harvard and beyond, and I hope and pray that Rob is in a better place. -- Jeff Bartel AB'88
