Albert's story...
On February 20th, Albert was diagnosed with cancer. It came as a huge shock as he, and we, thought he was simply battling pneumonia. But instead of getting better he was - over the course of a few weeks - getting weaker and weaker. Now we all realize that he has been battling something much more serious and likely for some time. Tests indicate cancer has invaded his colon, liver, lungs, rib and brain. He has melanoma (skin cancer) as well. He has also suffered at least one heart attack that, combined with the pneumonia, has weakened him considerably. Because of this, his doctors have agreed that chemotherapy is not an option at this point. They are, however, initiating radiation therapy next week to control the growth of the brain tumours and in early April (he has to be at last 30 days out from the most recent heart attack) they plan to do surgery on the tumour in the colon. All these efforts are palliative. The goal is to keep him comfortable, cognizant and pain-free as long as possible.
The doctors have suggested, barring a miracle, he will be with us for another three to six months. This is hard news for Albert and all of us. However, he remains peaceful and joyful. His first act, after hearing the diagnosis, was to pray. "Lord, you know...." he began, and then ended with "Hallelujah."
Albert intends to live every day, as he always has, to the full - enjoying family and friends, re-living happy memories, telling his favourite jokes and talking with, and about, his Heavenly Father. He has had dozens of visitors, sometimes up to 20 a day. Always a pastor, his ministry continues.
Thank you for your encouraging messages, your visits and above all, your prayers.
