A day of good news – for me and the tree
After a long meeting with the breast surgeon today, a lot of things feel more settled, and I’m feeling quite relieved.
1) The tumor in the right breast (the one I felt that took me to the doctor last February, which was fast-growing) is COMPLETELY GONE! The one in the left breast, which was much trickier to find and hard to image, is inconclusive on the MRI results, but is at least a lot smaller, and what remains is likely to be DCIS (ductal carcinoma in situ, which is not invasive and is the kind of breast “cancer” that they are beginning to take a “watch & wait” approach to rather than treat – and are even thinking of removing “carcinoma” from its name because it’s not clear that it ever spreads beyond the ducts in many cases).
2) Given the results of the MRI, the surgeon feels it is highly unlikely that there will be any cancer in my lymph nodes, and the odds of me getting metastatic cancer are significantly lower. She will check 2 or 3 sentinel nodes on each side during the surgery. If there is no cancer there, then that’s it, she sews me back up and I won’t need any radiation treatments!
3) I’m done with chemo!! Given the MRI results and how low my platelet counts were last week, they don’t think more chemo is going to do anything for me, and it’s better to get me more fully recovered and on to surgery.
4) Given that I’m done with chemo and feeling quite well already, we should be able to go visit Don’s dad as we’d hoped.
5) The surgery will be scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 3rd. I will likely have a 1-2 night stay in the hospital, and a couple of weeks of intensive recovery, followed by a couple more weeks before I’m able to return to all normal activities. Plus however long it takes me to get used to my new shape.
We also had an arborist come out today to look at our trees, especially the birch tree I’ve been meditating with and lying in the hammock under (see my entries of March 17th and April 12th). When we first moved in 11 years ago an arborist told us the birch tree would have to go soon. When we had him back a couple years later, he said he was surprised that it was holding its own more than he expected. Well, it’s been quite a few years since we’ve had it looked at (so long that we can’t remember who that arborist was!), and my closer attention to it this year made me realize that one of the three trunks is nearly completely dead. Though I love the tree more and more as I commune with it, I was concerned about the danger to us, our house, and our neighbor’s house and figured it was time to get it looked at again. Bill from H & H Arborists came out today and reassured me that he could remove the dying trunk and likely save the other two by injecting a relatively low-impact insecticide that would help it recover from the bronze-headed birch borer problem. We will of course have to research this, and we know this is only going to extend its life, not save it forever, but between the good news about my own prognosis and that of the tree, I’m feeling very grateful!!
While I was getting pretty good at living with both weakness and uncertainty, it is nice to be feeling both physically healthier and more solidly optimistic about my future. In fact, during tonight’s Snowflower Sangha meeting, which Don led on the topic of bodhicitta as a “BHAG,” a big, hairy, audacious goal for all beings to be enlightened and free from suffering, I started thinking seriously about my work in the world and how I want it to evolve over the next couple of decades. Maybe this is what they call a “new lease on life.”

Wonderful news! Thank you for the prompt update-- we were thinking of you today!
So great to hear this uplifting and encouraging news. Much love and much healing energy continue to be sent your way tonight!
Wonderful news Becca. Just plain wonderful! Often one hears about how life experiences are like the pruning of a plant, where in the pruning represents a painful challenge, a loss of some part of the plant, but ultimately leading to reinvigoration. The loss of its branch and injection of insecticide sort of parallel the chemo and surgery as does the comfort the tree has provided you and the extension of life you are providing it. It presents quite the image. Take care.
So good to hear.....good omen for the rest of the journey. Blessings
September 3. It doesn't seem so ominous, from my perspective. Let us know what, if any, special metta you would like directed towards you, besides what is already being sent. May all the healing energies of this universe, and beyond, be with you!
such great news, Becca! I am happy for you and your tree.
Woohoo !! Congratulations !! So happy for you :-)
Wonderful news! Sending continued strength and healing to you.
I am so thrilled to hear this news! Sending lots of love.
Hooray! Delighted to join in the celebration!
oh hooray! what wonderful news on all fronts! September 3rd seems an auspicious date for your warrior woman surgery for the sake of your life. congratulations on your new BHAG lease on life! xxooxxxxooo
wonderful, Becca. Woo hoo. So glad to hear you're thinking long term.
we are so thankful to hear the good news! And will still continue to keep you in our thoughts and prayers as you go through surgery and recovery and eventually back to your wonderful and full life. Much love.
I am touched once again by your reflections Becca and the blessings of such good news and outlook. I ditto the woo hoo's! Toot-toot.
This is such great news! I would like to suggest getting some cozy button-up shirts to wear after your surgery. It is likely you will have drains immediately after the surgery and a week or so after. Wearing a button-up shirt will make it much easier to access those drains. They will also be easier / more comfortable to get on and off than a regular shirt.
Great news! I'm thrilled to hear it. Thanks as usual for sharing and hope to give you a congratulatory hug (or any kind of hug, really) soon! xoxo
Wonderful news, Becca! May you go from strength to strength! Love Joan
Great news, Becca! Blessings! Gail
Amazing on all sides!
Wonderful news all around. What better way to lead into the new year!
I am super happy to hear this! A note on the birch tree, in case it's of any use: a friend who knows a tremendous amount about plants told me that birches, in particular, do best when their root zone is well protected by mulch, and/or shade....like maybe from your hammock!
It is a very GOOD morning, after reading your news on the success of all your treatments, both medically and spiritually. You sound energized, and looking forward..........I agree it does sound like a new lease on life.
Hallelujah ! Such wonderful news. The Talmud says :כי האדם עץ השדה, a Human being is like a tree of the field... May both you and the tree be strong and flourish With love and caring, Bilha
Ps. It is not the Talmud, but the Torah...
Let me also add my cheers. What very good news!
Becca, it appears that all is aligned and you are on the way to your next evolution. I wish you strength and fortitude on the next steps in your life journey. I will pray for success and health for you, Don and the tree. In so many ways our trees (and they are all special) are like us and we need to be gentle and strong on their behalf when the time comes. So to it is with us. Best to you and Don as you venture forward. So much good Karma that it all will work out well. Love from this corner of the cyber world, David
I'm so happy and grateful to hear this news! Love and Hugs, Becca
Wonderful news!
Celebrating the good news--for you and the tree, dear Becca, with gratitude for the wisdom you share in expressing our profound Interbeing with everything.
What great news to read this morning! Blessings, hugs and smiles to you.
Thank you for taking us on this journey, Becca, and for sharing both the wonderful and the frightening thoughts. I will be smiling for you today.
Best news ever!!
Dear Becca, We have not met, but I have been on a retreat or two with Don and am working with the year long practice that he is also working with. Because I have felt drawn to his kind and gentle openhearted nature, I wanted to be aware of what was happening for you, too. I do feel caring for both of you and have appreciated your sharing your journey. I have my own physical challenges that I am learning so much from and have considered writing about, but have not gone ahead and done so! I am so happy to hear your news, both about the cancer and about the return of your energy and interest in, curiosity about what's next. I love the possibility of using what is happening in our lives for 'fuel' to warm and bring peace to the lives of others. Thank you for sharing your process All the best, diana
So happy to hear this news Becca. I'm feeling deep gratitude to whatever forces are out there in the cosmos that grant health and well-being. Stay healthy for that surgery, and we'll be with you through the recovery period and beyond.
Hi Becca: I haven't been checking in as regularly as I'd hoped, so I've gotten to read through several entries today. I am in awe of your spirit and so grateful for the thoughts that you share. I appreciate that you are steering your journey to such a large extent, creating support and options for yourself all along. I loved hearing about your tree - what a wise, beautiful pair you are. I'll be thinking of you on Sept 3 especially.
Yay!!! Here's to you and your tree! Sept 3 is on the other side of the mountain, back to health and your personal BHAG. Hugs!
Wonderful news! Hope the next step will go very well. Grateful for you in this world.
We are so happy to hear that this news is all so good. We are feeling vulnerable this week as a good friend our age just died from a stroke, so taking our friends for granted is not an option. We hope for the best for you in the upcoming surgery and look forward to seeing you soon. With much love. Don and Mary
One word - Yippee!!!
Super news!!! Yeah!
