Thank you for supporting
On Tuesday - Jan. 22nd, Colleen and Mike took Caleb to the Emergency Department at AI Dupont Childrens Hospital. They were admitted to the hospital, and after a series of tests including a bone marrow biopsy, Caleb was diagnosed with Pre B-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. They will be living at the hospital with him for the next 30 days while he gets his first round of chemotherapy. After the 30 days, they will reassess the plan moving forward depending on how he responds to this first round.
ALL is the most common type of Leukemia. Which is good because it's the least complicated type so the prognosis is the best out of all of them. He has to do the 30 days of inpatient chemo, which is the protocol for all ALL patients. Then they do another bone marrow biopsy which gives them what is basically the fingerprint of his cancer. If his levels are as low as the doctors need them to be, then they proceed with an individualized outpatient chemo plan for 6-8 months. The after that he does an oral chemo pill once a week for 2.5-3.5 years. If after the first 28 days he doesn't respond the way they hope he becomes high risk or very high risk. They don't tell the family about those unless they need to. Cross that bridge when you come to it kind of thing
Caleb’s team of doctors and nurses are truly spectacular and they all love the hospital. This is going to be a long and difficult road for them. We wanted to start this page to keep people informed and to give information about how to support them.
Thank you all so much for your love and healing thoughts. We will post more soon.
