Out of Surgery!
Joel is officially out of surgery, awake, and cracking jokes.
We met with his neurosurgeon, Dr. Bastos, a few minutes ago and he felt that everything went just as expected. They were able to remove 90%+ of the tumor (needing to leave some traces around areas that provide motor functions). They were also able to confirm that it was a glioma, although the specific grade and type will take another week or so to identify.
So far, Joel's showing good strength and sensation in areas that are commonly affected by surgery in the area of the brain where his tumor was removed. He's also sporting a stylin' gauze mohawk from the surgery site.
In the post-surgery recovery suite Joel's already coming out of the anesthesia well, getting to know his recovery team on a first name basis, and inflicting a litany of Joel-caliber puns on everyone. Everyone here at Akron General Hospital have been incredibly helpful, generous, and skillful today and we're grateful for them.
