2nd day
Joel has made a lot of progress already! He's doing the most.
We've been meeting with all sorts of people who are assessing him, helping plan for our next steps, and checking up. It's been encouraging that they are being so attentive to him, and he's meeting and encouraging each one of them right back.
He's been relearning and practicing walking, connecting more to his left side, and doing more things independently. Wearing real pants has been a highlight of the day so far :)
Last night he moved from the Neuro ICU to a regular recovery room. He was able to be unhooked from several electronic leashes and have a quieter night. 3-4 cumulative hours of sleep made him feel much better than the cumulative 20-30 minutes of the night before. Hopefully he can relearn sleep as time goes on, the drugs work themselves out of him, and he is less afraid of not waking up again. It's all mind games- psychologically and physically.
Joel is navigating all of this with competence, hope, and humility to rely on others to help him.
The girls got to see him last night and they did great. It was emotional, sweet, and put them at greater ease that Dad's doing okay. He promptly fell asleep after the exertion of seeing them.
We're currently trying to figure out next steps as far as discharge and rehab options. No plan quite yet- insurance and all that (offbeat) jazz.
Thanks for loving us and following along.

One day at a time -- I remember from my own surgery 40 years ago in which a tumor near my brain was removed. Praying for a full recovery and the best outcome!
