Today I called St Andrews Cathedral and asked Father G to come and baptize Louis. My parents are here, and have proved to be a tremendous help I didn't know I needed. It was a stroke of luck that Louis' godmother was in town and could be here for his impromptu baptism. Father G arrived and gave a quick blessing. He also performed the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick for Louis. This is a Catholic sacrament that is prayed to bring spiritual and physical strength during an illness. I found this brief moment of prayer, surrounded by my loved ones (Dan, Mom, Dad, Griff, and Louis), to be so profoundly moving.
In that moment, it felt okay to acknowledge my feelings of fear and sadness that have been consuming me. I found comfort in Father G's words and his kindness. I taped a tiny prayer relic of Father Solanus inside Louis' isolette to watch over him through his healing.
We did not take any photos, but this is an event I will always remember.
Once Louis is at home and healthy, we intent to have a more formal ceremony that will also include ice cream treats.

Yes! I'm so glad this was able to be done. I had a bathtub baptism (unofficial from The Meeting) and it's brought me comfort even as an adult. I hope it gives you some comfort as well.
Welcome, Louis Ribbens, to the Body of Christ! I'm so glad that you had him baptized. Dave & I pray for Louis every evening when we pray together before going to sleep. -- Louis's great aunt Joyce Ribbens Campbell, writing from Guinea, West Africa
