April 7th, 2014

It was two days since Jacob was first admitted to University Medical Center in El Paso. During the first two days many ups and downs occurred with Jacobs condition and new facts were being discovered and dealt with. On Jacobs first day of being at UMC Jacob's neurosurgeon had told me he was without oxygen for as long as maybe 40 minutes.

On April 7th we requested the ambulance report. The ambulance report gave us so many great answers. The report stated that Jake had only been down after his accident for about 5 minutes rather than 40. His report also shed light on the fact why the ambulance crew did not intibate him. With most head injuries, the jaw will lock up and it is impossible to open the airway without causing further damage to the bones or spine. BUT his report and vitals show HE WAS BREATHING while in the ambulance. His breathing was labored due to his flailed chest but he was receiving oxygen to his brain. Jake's CO2 levels were very high in his blood which means he was hyperventilating. The ambulance crew did everything within their capabilities and power to make him stable and prep him for the long road ahead of him at UMC.
