Blue Shield has tentatively changed their decision

Hello all,

I've been waiting to publish this post to make sure I had the correct details from Bill, but I have very good news: Bill spoke to a physician from Blue Shield yesterday afternoon, and he was told that they should be covered for Gracie's stay at Craig Hospital. There was some discussion regarding who covers the air transport for Gracie, but Craig Hospital is already contributing to that expense, so even if the Fishers has to pay for that, it's manageable.

So it's time to call off the dogs. Bill was not told an explanation as to why Blue Shield changed their decision, but I would like to think it's because of the efforts yesterday by one or more persons contacting Blue Shield. I spoke to some of you about a peer medical review that I thought was in process yesterday that could have led to this decision, but Bill told me that the review did not happen, so that's not the reason. Whatever the cause, I am certainly rejoicing that it appears Gracie is going to be able to make the trip to Craig.

I will say that things are still fluid... Bill does not have the approval in writing, and there still is the issue of who covers air transport, but I am very hopeful. However, as Bill says, "I'll believe it when we're wheels up and in the air to Denver."

Thanks to so many of you who contacted me with suggestions and ideas. There was so much worthwhile information that I could not keep up with the emails that were coming in (for those that emailed me, sorry if I haven't gotten back to you yet). Regardless of if our efforts yesterday were the cause of the change of decision on Blue Shield's part, the value of the information and contacts was tremendous, and will be very useful in the future if they run into a similar situation.

For those of you that have contacted the media, I would ask that you provide them with this update. There may still be a story here if things go back the other direction next week, but I don't want to be knocking Blue Shield after they've apparently decided to support the Fishers.

Once the Fishers have a confirmation, I will let you all know!

Now, on a different, and even more positive, note, Gracie had her first food in weeks! Okay, I'll be more specific: her first food that she ate, on her own, without any tubes involved. Yesterday, she had a little bit of pudding and some sherbert ice cream. If I had not had anything cross my tongue for four weeks, I cannot imagine how good that must have tasted! She had no problems swallowing, which is great, although she's well away from having a four-course meal. Her digestive system has to get back into the swing of things (everything up to this point has been nutritional liquids with low digestive requirements), and they need to evaluate her ability to swallow to make sure she can handle more substantial meals, but that should all come in time.

All in all, a really good update. Thank you all for your efforts, and I hope to see many of you tomorrow at the luncheon.

Paul

Debbie & Bill, I'm so relieved to hear that the insurance company is going to do what they should have done in the first place. Prayer is fantastic, but the media certainly has it's place. All your family in Norman, Oklahoma, is thankful for this news and will continue our prayers for all the family.

This will all work out. Blue Shield is not the enemy here for all of you wondering. Health care is incredibly complex. This amazingly brave young child will get what she needs. The system sometimes just goes a bit haywire sometimes....

One small step or one Giant step with pudding and sherbet on top. We'll take it either way. Certainly was well worth all of our efforts, phone calls, emails, letters now let's concentrate on getting that plane in the air! Many thanks to Paul for keeping the messages traveling. What wonderful news for Gracie, Debbie, Bill and Emily. Hugs to you all. Nancy & Clint

Great news on all fronts! I'm so impressed with how so many people went into action mode to try to effect a change in Blue Shield's approach. Surely social media facilitated this but I believe it was the love for the Fishers that really made it happen. I can only marvel at how so many wonderful people seemed to do so much on this. I will keep praying. Have a good and safe flight Gracie and may your eating continue to improve. Godspeed!

I came down with poliomyelitis in the span of a few days in 1955, at age 5, just days before I was to receive the new vaccine. Within a few days I was paralyzed, hospitalized, and then transferred to a special polio hospital 3 hours from my home. I am telling you this because, perhaps like Grace's myelitis, there was no known cure. But a lot of us in the hospital got better on our own --- amazingly, the body finds ways to repair and rewire itself. I was back with my family in less than half a year, with lots of exercises for a while, but with no lingering effects. I have been a decent athlete all my life. Tell Grace and her parents to keep good thoughts. She has lots of people doing the same for her in Santa Barbara.

Thanks for all of the updates. We hope they will continue while in Colorado! We wish the Fisher family Godspeed on their journey and great success. We know that all is going to work out well and there will be a big recovery celebration this summer. We are certainly continuing to pray for Grace and the rest of the family. Grace is going to have to help Emily with her school work while she is in Denver. That's only fair for Emily. The best of everything to you all. We are so delighted that everything eventually worked out, even though you had to go through the initial disappointments. God Bless you all. Love, The Carrolls Pat, Mark, and Shirley

This is such good news that Gracie will be able to go to Craig Hosp. Whatever the reason I am certain that prayer had a hand (or several hands) in this positive turnabout. Extremely good news about being able to eat even a tiny bit. I will keep praying for multiple little miracles like these that will lead to healing and the future of dreams to make reality as she deserves. God Bless you and continue to take care of you all.
