Good news! Joel will get to come home tomorrow (Wednesday).
He's being discharged with the expectation that he will not be alone for long stretches of time, because someone will need to accompany him while walking. He's moving around well, but it's for extra safety. Falling from 6.5 feet would not be pretty. Today he did a whole staircase, walked outside for quite a distance on different surfaces, and practiced general life activities, all without assistance.
The team of therapists, social services, doctor, and nurses decided that he's safe to come home. It will be a long time before he can drive, and there are some other restrictions (no bending, lifting, etc), but he can do most simple things now.
So in 6 days he went from open skull on the operating table to THIS. We're both feeling lucky and proud and grateful. It is not usually this smooth.
I'm both nervous and excited to have him home. Here we go!

Oh Wow!!! Joy, I’m so Grateful for this news! I pray Joel’s progress is steady and smooth. Sending you Love and Healing. 🙏🙏🙏🙏❤️
Dear Joy and Joel, Lifting you both in prayer as you take the next step in this unwanted journey. You have both shown us what faith, hope, and love looks like. You have honestly shared every step and shown that this has been messy, painful, frightening, anxious, and tearful but through all of that your deep faith that God is in this with you every step of the way was the light around all of it. I truly appreciate that you share your honest struggles for each of you through this. Your heartfelt message you shared of holding both joy and suffering at the same time completely resonated with me. You helped put words to describe so many days of our messy lives. How can it be that there is so much joy in our hearts as we mourn the loss of a part of our lives. As you transition Joel's care home, please be sure to take time to refresh your soul, mind and body each day and please say yes to other caregivers. It will bless them if you do. Keep living into: Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
I just love this pic! Praise God for continued healing. It’s so sweet to see your smiles and the love and care you have for each other. May God continue to provide strength, peace, and wisdom in this journey. Hugs! ♥️🙏🏻
Celebrating this victory with you! Of course, there are many more challenges ahead, but also many more victories along the way! Let’s celebrate everyone of them together!
Amen & Amen!!
God is GOOD!!
Praise God!
Joel and Joy, I am just in awe of how the beauty of God’s grace and provision is demonstrated in your family and this story. You are a wonderful example of how marriage and family were meant to function. Once again, thank you for giving us the opportunity to see God’s glory demonstrated in our own community. Sending love and continuing in prayer. ~Tina Reiman
