Dry Run
March 16, 2017 at 3:21, we got the call that there was a potential donor lung for Jed.
Mentally we knew this call could come at anytime, yet the thoughts and emotions were still over whelming. There is a short time frame that is given to get to the hospital to start being prepped, so grabbing our bags and jumping in the car was a bit of a whirlwind.
We had been warned that there is a wait once you arrive at the hospital and the time of the actual surgery, so family slowly showed up at the hospital and we were given time to just hang out, talk, and pray. As the night went on Jed and I were informed about the risks with surgery and he started being prepped, yet no surgery had been scheduled. The family slowly headed out to local hotel to get some sleep and we were told to sleep until there was more information, they were guessing 4-8 am we would know more. Sleeping in the hospital with our adrenaline going was not easy. Come 6 am our nurse still had no information about surgery. At this point we knew that something had changed, shortly following the nurse came in one of the surgical team members to inform us that the donor lungs had started to deteriorate during the night. The lead surgeon did not feel that they were strong enough lungs to make the procedure worth while.
Another new wave of emotions; we were disappointed, yet appreciative of the surgical staff and their wisdom, and excited to be able to now celebrate our daughters Birthday with her that coming weekend.
We have been encouraged that these "Dry Runs" are common when on the transplant list and we are now better prepared for the next time the phone call comes. We continue to praise God and know that He is with us and guiding us.
