Well today was our first appointment with Dr. Marx. He is the cardiologist at Boston Children's Hospital. He confirmed the diagnosis of Transposition of the Greater Arteries and also states that the whole in Mason's heart still looks fairly large. He did bring up that the 2 Vessel Cord may indicate a kidney issue, but we should know more after he is born.
We also got to tour the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit at Boston's Children's Hospital. We were told that after Mason is born they will stabilize him and then immediately transport him to the Cardiac ICU. While there he will undergo an echocardiogram that will take anywhere from 2-4 hours which will allow them to have a deeper understanding on the ins and outs of Mason's special heart! He will then undergo an Arterial Switch Operation between 2-5 days after birth depending on the surgery schedules. He will spend anywhere from 5-10 days in the ICU depending on how he copes, and then he will move to the Cardiac floor for about a week.
As for life here in Boston, we are definitely getting used to it. We are starting to get the hang of the bussing system and all it entails. We have met some AMAZING people while here! There is something to be said about living with many families that are all enduring similar battles. We have met families that have children with other heart problems, children that are waiting for transplants, etc. It is definitely reassuring to be able to relate with others! The community is also phenomenal! In the 2 1/2 days we have been here people have come in and cooked dinner for us. Saturday they made Chinese and then tonight they made lasagna. We also got to eat breakfast to the sound of a harp being played in the family room.
As different as Boston may be from home, I feel that we are definitely in the right spot and lucky to not only have the love and support of family and friends, but also of perfect strangers in a city that we are just beginning to explore!
We have 3 appointments on Thursday at Brigham and Women's. We will hopefully find out the day we will be induced... That is if all this walking doesn't pop him out a bit earlier!
With Love,
Tiffany & Chris
