Phase 2 begins

I began phase 2 of my rectal cancer treatment yesterday: radiation and chemo. I survived the past 4 months of chemo, but it was pretty lousy. However, I was able to be fully functional the whole time, even continue running half the time, albeit slower and shorter. Now I’m doing radiation 5 days a week for the next 5 weeks. I should be fine for the first two weeks before the effects kick in, mostly fatigue and sunburn-like discomfort. Chemo remains part of this phase with 12 pills a day, but it’s a lower dosage than before and hopefully the effects will be milder. I already feel some yucky ones, so we’ll see.

Phase 3 will likely be surgery in late February.

My routine for the next 5 weeks will be to sleep in, exercise, get radiation at Stanford, and then be in the office around noon.

Fortunately, I should be finished with the treatments by Christmas for my family to visit. In the meantime, I look forward to having my boys home for Thanksgiving!

Thank you all for your warm wishes, notes, visits and general caring. All gestures have been deeply appreciated, probably more than you realize.

Peace & love,

Peter

Thank you for inspiring us with your strength. My oldest joined the "Forest" which makes me proud. Step one is convincing the other students that she's just a member like the rest of them, and not a volunteer ;-) I thought that would bring you a smile. Stay strong!

Peter, thank you so much for keeping us updated on your chemo progress. Hoping you feel my positive thoughts as I drive by your house 10 times a day! (at a very safe 25 mph, of course.)

Peter, your stamina, strength and endurance are truly admirable. We are glad to hear that you will have a chemo-free holidays with your family. I should mention that Sam came up to me to say hi at the Menlo homecoming game. He was very well spoken, and seems to be enjoying U of Richmond. It's nice to see our boys developing into fine young men!
