November update

Steve has been at home with hospice care for a month now. Happily, October brought us weeks of warm, sunny days that coaxed him out to our patio on many occasions to enjoy the sunshine and fall foliage, to talk with visitors, and to watch his grandchildren play. There has, however, been a marked decline in his energy and stamina in recent days. While still mobile, he uses a cane for stability, and he increasingly seeks and finds comfort and tranquility by resting quietly indoors.

We are all, Steve and his family, so appreciative of all the notes, letters, comments and expressions of your admiration, respect and love for Steve and grateful for your support of all of us. Thank you.

Dear All, especially Steve, I had computer problems and was unable to read your previous two updates until today. I am devestated with your news, and wish nothing for you but some peace and joy in your remaining days. You mean so much to so many, a position well-earned by being the man that you are. We shall miss you dreadfully and long for your calm guidance. We will simply have to carry that with us in our hearts and minds. Travel well, Steve. You have lead a truly good life. With love, Jo

Dear Steve and family, You are all in my thoughts daily. Steve, I remember with fondness the old days of co-teaching the doc sem with you--I still enjoy "springing" some of those readings and arguments on colleagues/postdocs at my current workplace! I hope you are able to experience long moments of peace and comfort during your days, and please remember how many lives you've touched--your work and philosophy and compassion will live on through so many of us! Love, Bev (Rockhill) Levine

Dear Steve - I was thinking of you this past week as I talked with my friend from North Carolina. That brought me here and I am comforted to see that you are surrounded by such a wonderful community of family and friends to wrap you in their love during this difficult time. I hope this note reaches you and that you know that it was such a gift to get to work with you during my time in New Orleans. I learned so much from you and your perspective on work, science, and life. There are things that I will carry with me throughout my life. I know that your passion has had such a great impact on so many people and so many communities. It is something that will continue to grow and last for many many years to come. Thank you for being you and sharing yourself and your spirit with me and so many. I don't know if I ever let you know that I decided to attend University of Michigan on a full scholarship. Thanks to your letter of recommendation, no doubt. It may seem like a small thing, but UMich is such a great opportunity for me to move forward with my life. Please know that your support has always felt like a gift and meant a great deal to me. Love, Molly Szymanski

Steve, I'm thinking about you and your family and sending warm thoughts your way. Eighteen years ago at this time I was back home in Pennsylvania helping care for my cancer-sick dad when I reached out to you about what I was seeing around us. You helped me take my personal quest to understand what was happening and turn it into a larger struggle for knowledge on behalf of a community, and ultimately to change my life's path. You've been there to teach me and help me at so many points along the way. I cannot thank you enough. I know there are many like me. Please know that you are surrounded always by our love and gratitude. Peace to you and yours -- Sue.

Dear Steve and Betsy - I am not sure what planet I have been on, but I have just learned of Steve's illness. Let me tell you now that Steve always had a special place in my heart from graduate school days, and that when I met Betsy, she moved right into my heart, too. You are both very special and I am glad and thankful that our paths crossed. I ache for what you have been through - it is clear that you have been surrounded by so many people who love you and perhaps that smoothed the sharpest edges. Much love to you. Marilyn Butler

Steve and Family, I am always thinking about Steve and mentioning him to people who don't know him. Steve, your exemplary public health advocacy and ethical and moral values is what I focus on mentioning to others. Your suffering will not last forever, but your reputation and contributions will. This life and its materialistic needs is not what we are all about, there is a much higher cause and purpose to our being. This is the proof that none of the people commenting here have any special interest in other than your good person and the positive impact you had on many people.

All of us at Beyond Nuclear want to express our deepest thanks for all of your work, which has been so essential to us as we continue to confront the many myths and lies about nuclear power. Thank you for your work supporting claims of people exposed to radiation. Thank you for sharing your expertise and the expertise of others. Thank you for not bending to pressure, and for presenting us with a legacy of intellect, integrity and expertise that we can build on to help victims of radiation exposure to remain visible rather than vanish in intentional indifference. We use -- and continue -- to use your important work. One example here --- Three Mile Island: The Truth -- would have been impossible without your seminal study. Alice would be proud. Thank you for this legacy, your wisdom, your humility, your gentleness.
