Round 3!
It's been a while since the last update as we have been in a holding pattern. After 10 days in the hospital, Sofia's ANC got over 200 and they let us go home. The next step was for that number to reach 750 so we could start our next round of treatment. Well 9 days later we finally hit this morning with an ANC of 780. This has been the longest stretch of waiting for counts since we started. Sofia's last chemo was a month ago! The good news is that with this long of a recovery period, Sofia's feeling great. Her appetite is sooo much better and she's as energetic as always.
So, we are on to round three which is called Interim Maintenance. The first step is a lumbar puncture and a bone marrow aspirate. This is the big test that will let us know if the cancer is now undectecable. This is a moment that we pray about non stop!! Right after the procedure, which will happen Wednesday morning, we will be admitted into the hospital to start chemotherapy. She will be recieving high dose methotrexate which needs to be flushed quickly through her system, which is why we are kept in-patient. Once she clears the medicine we can go home. This could take anywhere from 3-14 days, but we are hoping for 3! There are of course a whole list of horrible side effects but we are not focusing on those. We are focusing on drinking lots of water, playing lots of games and thinking really positive thoughts. We will also be celebrating St. Patrick's Day, by making all of our nurses and doctors wear the hats that we will be bringing.
The plan is to repeat this in patient chemo every 14 days for a total of 4 cycles. The tricky thing is she has to hit 750 every time. So we are hoping counts recover much quicker this time or this round of treatment could take a very long time. But, her body will do exactly what it needs!
Please say an extra prayer on Wednesday morning for our little warrior!!
