Silver Linings

I've been replaced in Cindy's bed by Brock* Hedgehog, a gift from our daughter, Laura.  Brock* is quite a hit with the medical staff on Cindy's floor, especially Dr. Anderson who has undertaken actual hedgehog research since meeting Brock.*

Brock is one of many silver linings of Cindy's (and my) AML journey.  As I arrived tonight to visit with Cindy, I wryly commented, "Here I am on my daily half hour drive to come visit my wife!"  Cindy got it immediately, offering a conspiratorial smile.

Reflecting about her visit yesterday with Hillside colleague, Emily, she admitted that she already feels removed from what's going on at work because, well, she's focusing intensely on AML right now that is bringing plenty of challenge and uncertainty but many silver linings too.

Today's silver linings featured visits with girlfriends, Cherie T. and Debbie W..  I (Glenn) came along later, the token male (besides Dr. Anderson and connecting with son, Adam on FaceTime).  When I arrived around 6, the last bits of a unit of blood (her 4th) was feeding into Cindy's weary body.  (Another silver lining - life-giving blood donors. Is anyone in the Village a regular blood donor?).

Cindy's still tolerating treatment very well with continued weakness and some indigestion her most serious issues today. I asked Cindy's nurse to print off a list of oral meds she is receiving that includes some vitamin supplements to offset deficiencies that have developed.  My Cindy visit today ended on two high notes:

  1. Watching the 20-minute presentation our daughter, Laura gave today in Melbourne, Australia at a software developers conference.  Check it out on YouTube: Harry the Hedgehog Learns You A Communication on You Tube.
  2. Listening to today's Our Daily Bread (ODB) devotional, "Good Works Prepared" featuring Ephesians 2: 6-10. Our takeaway was that we are beneficiaries of "good works prepared for us in advance" thanks to all of you who have come along side us to help us carry this load.

* Originally, we called Brock Oscar. As it turns out, Oscar is a mythical hedgehog whereas Brock is a real, stuffed one. Sorry for the confusion.

Let me remind you of a couple things... First, we can't have silver linings unless we have clouds, that's just the way God created this world, and to see the silver linings you have to face upwards, look at the clouds. Second, the translations of Ephesians 2:10 are weak, PC before their time. The word translated 'workmanship' is actually the Greek "poemica". God is creating a poem of each of our lives and He is adding lines to the poem daily. He is creating a Masterpiece!!!!!

Except that I got his name wrong. Oscar is actually Brock. See the footnote I added about this.
