What Cancer Cannot Do

Today I took Mom to the hospital to get blood work done. She has another appointment tomorrow to meet with the doctor about how her body is reacting to the treatments thus far. We are keeping our fingers crossed that we get good news!

After the blood work, we stopped into the small “specialty shop” that has wigs and Caps For Sale (teacher reference) in Strong. There was a lovely woman there helping mom who convinced her to try on some wigs. After she tried the first one on we were just about in tears laughing at how ridiculous she looked. After several more 70s hair styles, I told her, “Thank goodness you didn’t come here with Dad. He would have tried to tell you that you looked good in all of these!” We had some good laughs mixed with an emotional conversation with a woman who is currently battling cancer. She gave Mom some pointers and tips for the future. I felt so touched that she went out of her way to speak to her about wigs and hats. People are truly special and I made sure to thank her for the small, but oh so large, gesture.

Throughout the ugliness that cancer has brought to our life, it has also brought such joy and happiness. We have never been closer as a family, both our immediate family and the many relatives that continuously show their support. We appreciate the beauty in the world so much more than before. We realize now how trivial our concerns and complaints were before. We love harder and laugh more often. Mom received a framed saying from one of my high school friends. I want to share it because it is so true, especially to our family.

It cannot quench the Spirit.
