Hiking, Dog Walks, Picnics, and Family Time

While sitting on the plane heading to Salt Lake City last week I calculated how long it had been since I'd seen most of my family. 14 months for my parents...about 16 months for my sister, and almost two years for my brothers. Way too long!

When the wheels touched down in Salt Lake I basically sprinted out of the airplane and into the waiting Uber. I really don't think I could have walked any faster. I was totally focused on seeing my family. My uber pulled up in front of Eric and J's temporary digs and there they all stood. My mom, dad, sister, brother Eric, and Johnanna. Needless to say, I couldn't hold back the tears.

But, you know what's great about my family...no matter how long ago we saw each other last it's like no time has passed at all. We pick right up with our jokes, stories, and hugs.

I spent 4 days full of family time. We got out on the trails around Salt Lake, took a great jeep ride up into Emigration canyon, had a picnic and naps in the park, and some good old fashion family time. For me the week was about laying eyes on Eric and Johnanna and jumping in to help however I could. Something about squeezing Eric and being together as a family was good for my soul.

Eric did really well all week with his radiation and chemo. While his treatments will never be routine...they are becoming a bit more routine and he is progressing well. We're all hopeful that the next several weeks look like this past one! Doug is on the way to Salt Lake this week for some brother bonding time. Between Eric's running and the altitude, I have a feeling Doug is going to be tired!

I speak for all of us when I say that your thoughts, prayers, and support mean so much. We are grateful for each of you and apologize if we can't get back to everyone. If you are interested in supporting Eric and J there are several ways to help:

  • Financial contributions can be made through the PostHope donations page. Eric and J are using these funds for their housing, food, and transportation needs.
  • We're still selling Sullivan Strong wristbands.
  • Share a fun story with Eric to help lift his spirits via NewlyWords
  • Gift cards to WinCo grocery store, Whole Foods, Door Dash, or to restaurants/coffee shops in the Sugar House neighborhood.
  • Prayers and good vibes!

I'm heading back to Salt Lake in a few weeks. I'm looking forward to more hiking, dog walks, and family time!
