Finally, Some Good News!
Jason and I got up early and went to the Proton Therapy Center. We met with the business person and the person handling our appeals. We were given a 35% discount and then we wrote the largest check we'd ever written. We were able to cover the full amount (I have never been so grateful for hard work & Jason's devotion to saving). We did have some family on standby to wire some funds if we came up short but luckily, that was unnecessary. Once the payment went through, we discussed when and how the treatment would be scheduled.
This afternoon Ralph Viator (from Rawls) and I went out on an excursion to see U. of Houston. He showed me places he'd lived, the campus, and we visited the business school. For the record, the UH business school is not housed in a building as nice as Rawls, however, they do have multiple computer labs that were getting lots of use, a factor that our students often complain about (that we have no computer lab). It was a lot of fun to walk around the campus and see Ralph's excitement in going down memory lane!
At the end of our excursion I checked the MD Anderson website and saw that my first treatment is scheduled for Thursday and every week day for 30 weekdays (M-F). We will continue to put pressure on both United Healthcare and ERS. Stay tuned for a post about how state of Texas employees can help us put pressure on ERS and the state. Moving forward!

Awesome!! I am so happy for you. Thanks to MD Anderson for giving you an incredible discount. I love that place, and note what good care I received when I was a patient. Happy beyond words for you and your family. If we need to do crowd funding in the future, I won't hesitate to help out in whatever way I can.
Awesome! Get this next chapter going, and if we need a Kickstarter campaign we are all in!
I am so glad you are starting the treatment. If only United Healthcare and ERS would allow you to only pay the difference between Photon and Proton.....But that would be too rational.
At least you can start the treatments.
This is great news, you should be able to pay the difference!
Hooray!! Am also on standby for funds as one house on market!! Glad you're starting Thursday. This is no time to put things off. Glad Ang coming Friday too!! Sending love.
Shannon, outstanding news. We are so glad you are getting the best care available--and I am with Marilyn--if you ever need crowd sourcing we are ready to be part of that.
So glad for this news. Very disappointed in your insurance program. Don't be afraid to have a kickstarter acct. You can raise money for A's college since your savings are being depleted.
Shannon, That is what I do. I help raise money for innovation! That was pretty innovative what you and Jason did!! I know how to crowd fund, kick start and if we need to, we can start a "gofundme". Please, please don't be afraid to ask if you need it. I just helped a friend's mother raise funds for her brain surgery, so it's done all the time. I can safely say that Ralph is fun to watch when he gets excited. Its hard to enjoy it, though, when you are sitting in his Cost Accounting class. lol! You and Jason are amazing, and its wonderful that you are keeping this journal. Especially when Aiden gets older and wants to look back with some perspective. I hope he is holding up. I think of him and know that he may have some "issues" later due to the lack of control this experience has placed in front of all of you. Nothing that can't be fixed with lots of love (and maybe candy) from you and Jason.
Good luck.
