Taking the new ALS drug!
This month, Dad began treatment with Radicava, which was just approved by the FDA this summer. It is the first new treatment for ALS in 22 years! It is not a cure, but the medication has slowed progression in some patients, and patients occasionally have shown improvement. There are few side effects, however, some people have an allergic reaction. So far, he has had no problem! The medication is given through IV infusion for 14 consecutive days followed by 14 off, repeating for 6 months. They taught Mom how to administer the medicine at home. You can read more about Radicava here.
This drug is covered 100% by insurance for the rest of 2017. In 2018, he'll have to start over with the deductible and out-of-pocket maximum again, but we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. There is a program to help cover the costs.
Please join us in praying that this treatment is beneficial!
