Time to teach!

We are overjoyed by the good news we received today.  The MRI showed that radiation did its job. Mom’s blood work also looks good which means that her body is tolerating the Tarceva.  Her symptoms are minimal at this point.  A little cough, a little tired out, but more than a little grateful for all of her blessings!  Your kind words, cards, texts, and messages mean the world to her. Thank you so much!

Time to teach! Lung cancer kills almost twice as many women as breast cancer. We spend $26,000 in federal research funds for every person who dies of breast cancer and less than $1,500 for every one who dies of lung cancer.   How can this be true? Lung cancer carries a stigma.  People assume it is caused by a very poor choice to smoke.  One in six people who are diagnosed with lung cancer are like Mom and have never smoked anything!  If you have lungs, you can get lung cancer.

Mom had no symptoms of cancer, none at all, until one month before she was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. We all pray that an early screening device is developed soon.  Mom read an interesting article about canine sniffing cancer dogs.  There is research being done to train dogs to detect early-stage cancer in humans.  Dogs can detect the compounds that are present in people with cancer that are found in breath.  In the article, dogs identified breast cancer 88% of the time and lung cancer 99% of the time.  Does it make you smile to imagine a puppy sniffing your breath at your next doctor’s appointment?

What wonderful news for you and your entire family, Cris. I will continue to pray to St. Pio for your continued health. One day at a time, right? And your little puppy is so understanding, they seem to know when someone needs an extra hug. Blessings and best wishes.

Reilly, thank you so much for sharing this wonderful news. We continue to keep your Mom and your family in our prayers. Thank you also for sharing the research info. We've heard amazing stories about dogs saving peoples lives by detecting the onset of heart attacks, but didn't know about the cancer research. I'd gladly let a dog sniff my breath, more than I would want my doctor to do so. :)
