Don't wear fear...

Its the end of the first day after Eden's surgery. Today, she got up, walked around the ICU unit floor many times, climbed several flights of stairs, ate real food, and talked, slept, and smiled. Wow. Eden is really incredible. I'm not surprised, but I am awed.

I just went outside for a walk to smell the air and think. All of a sudden, Spotify played Cat Stevens' Don't Be Shy. This is the best tune from Eden's all time favorite movie, Harold and Maude. "Don't be shy, just let your feelings roll on by. Don't wear fear, or nobody will know you're there. Just lift your head and let your feelings out instead."

Needless to say, I was the crazy guy singing outloud with his earphones on. At first I started crying, and then I realized that tomorrow, when Eden and I get home, I'm going to watch Harold and Maude with her. She's the one who is showing me not to fear. She's the one who lets me let my feelings out. I stopped crying and felt an uplifting emotion.

So, hug the people you love, sing a song, cry, laugh, or just smile and enjoy their company. Let your love flow.

Because I can't end this post on sentimentality alone, let me conclude with one of Eden's recent gems. After eating her very soft food dinner, she asked for a toothbrush and toothpaste then remarked to me that she had to put an end to her bean and pudding breath. As we were laughing about her comment, in walks the neuro residents in their evening round coming to check on this lovely woman who just had brain surgery yesterday.
