Post Surgery Recovery and Future Plans
Hi Everyone, my apologies as it's been a while since I've last posted. Thanks so much for all your thoughts, prayers, and good vibes, because it worked nicely with the surgery and the recovery! A couple quick updates:
Post Surgery Recovery: I have been home from the surgery for 2 weeks now and happy to share that the healing is going wonderfully. 2 days after being discharged from the hospital I dropped the pain meds cold turkey and endured the little pain that remained. My incisions are healing nicely, I'm mobile, and aside from a bit of pain in my left side and some very minor discomfort on the incisions (specifically the large "C-Section" equivalent), I feel normal. I did notice however that I'm having significantly more bowel movements because they removed about 9 inches of my colon, much of which was my reservoir, which will slowly adapt back over the next few months.
Future Plans: I met with Dr. Back my oncologist, and Dr. Fichera the colon surgeon yesterday. Dr. Fichera mentioned that when he removed the tumor in my colon, that he had clear margins, which indicates that the tumor was completely removed along with some additional healthy portions of the colon, confirming that all the cancer was removed from the colon.
It was determined by Dr. Back that the best strategy at this point is to resume with chemo starting November 6th after my body has had enough time to recover from the surgery, and continue for 3 more cycles every 2 weeks, taking us to the end of December. This is to get the remaining cancer that was not detected on the liver and anywhere else it can be. This is to also shrink down the tumors on the lungs. At the conclusion of the chemo, we'll determine whether surgery on the lungs is a good idea, but what makes it difficult is that the lungs do not regenerate like the liver does, so resection of the lungs is much less likely of an option.
Overall, Dr. Back said that things could not have gone better, and that with my positive response to the chemo, the clear margins resection of the colon, and my post-surgery healing, that we're in the best possible situation right now!
Thank you all again for everything you do for my family and me. 4 more chemos, a possible surgery, and I can return back to work and resume normal life!
