January 24, 2018

The news from the doctors today is good.  My white blood cells counts keep dropping which means the chemo is still working / doing its job.  It puts a new perspective on what good news is.  I am sleeping well at night when not being poked or prodded.

I don't recall if I brought this up in previous posts, but my sense of taste is completely messed up. Foods I normally love to eat are just tasting bad, almost like soap.  This is normal, but really frustrating. To each of you that has made home cooked food for Karen to bring to the hospital, God bless you.  Some are hit and miss with me due to my blown taste buds, but they all taste good to Karen and it helps her out a lot.  I told Karen this morning that if I had to only order off the hospital menu it would be very painful.  I would probably be living off Cheerios.  The home cooked meals are so much better.  Thank you one and all.

All in all It has been a boring day which is good on one hand but hard on someone who likes to be active.  I walk the halls a lot and ride the stationary bike but the view does not change.  I am working on my mindset, because I still have a while to go.

I want to say again that I do read all the posts, texts and emails that you send and and I thank you for them very much.

Kevin, Thank you for taking the time to update us. I know it is impossible to keep up a good atttitude/mind set all of the time, but you seem to have that under control. I’ll keep saying this but we are all here for you and will continue with the thoughts and prayers ❤️ The Skinners

Woo hoo! Good to hear that all is going according to plan. Sorry to hear about the taste buds being messed up (pretty damn eloquent aren't I?)

Kevin, I hope you got a chance to see the MarcoPolo that Manuel and I sent to Karen today. I told him about what's going on with you and he was so, I don't even know the words, I guess "feeling" for you and the whole family. He has a heart of gold and could barely get his words out. He sends his well wishes and is ready if you need him to fix anything. :) Boring sounds good. Food tastes like metal or soap - I remember Kori having that experience. Bummer. Karen gave me a Polo tour of your room. Love the pics on the walls. If the snow is any good in Bend, I'm going to take a few runs in your honor on Saturday. Keep the faith...

With the taste buds going haywire, maybe this is a good time to give squash another try? ;) Are you in the habit of listening to podcasts? Doesn’t provide scenery but could make the hall laps less boring maybe?

If I was located closer, I'd make you some Chicken n' Noodles to try. Unfortunately, I doubt they'd freeze and travel very well. Stay as busy as possible. Would a board game with another patient in similar bored circumstances be possible? Or to be sure and stay germ free, maybe an online game with other patients? I know it's not your usual day and no one would want to see you get "hooked" on them, but maybe they'd help keep the mind occupied. Just a thought. My thoughts are with you.

Normally I would not recommend a video/phone game but there is one I use when I NEED it. It's called 2for2. It is a strategy game.

The Chemo Army is at work! Keep that positive spirit and let God handle your worries. I know it's hard to let go of those, but just keep giving them over and focusing on the warriors winning the battle in your blood stream. Sorry to hear about the taste buds - Tom went through this as well - and we did lots of take out vs. hospital food. Let us know if we can pick up anything for you - just text and I'll be there.

Kevin, Thank you so much for your updates. I think about you daily and really hope to see new posts from you, which I understand may not always be easy. This must be so hard for you knowing how active and determined you are. Take the time to enjoy your walks down the hall and keep up the great attitude. Julie
