August 11, 2014

The last couple of weeks have been very tough for Meghan.  On July 28th the Hickman Line was put in and chemo chemo started that night.  The plan is three days in a row of chemo.  These three days are spent as an inpatient at Hopkins for a total of 4 day inpatient.  Then she has two weeks off before then next round of chemo, which is scheduled to be August 18th.

Sadly, the chemo began affecting Meghan right away.  She has lost 12 pounds already.  On August 7th at her check up in the clinic she was given a pint of blood and two bags of platelets.  That evening she developed a fever and was taken to Carroll and Hopkins then sent an ambulance to transport her.  She was given antibiotics for three days.  Her ANC (helps fight infection) count on Thursday was 0  and back up to 426 on Sunday.  YEAH!!!  She is feeling much better now.

Another side affect is that Meghan has now lost all her hair again.  But as always, she takes it all in stride and has such a great attitude about it.  Today was her first day out with no hair and she didn't even wear a hat.

Praying that this will be a good week for her before we start the process all over again on the 18th.

After the next round of chemo Meghan will have scans done to see how the tumor is responding.  If she has a negative scan then the next step will be a bonemarrow transplant.  Last week her brothers and I went for blood work and her dad is having his done today to find the best match.  Originally the doctors were considering a stemcell transplant, but feel the bonemarrow transplant would give Meghan a much higher chance of the cancer not coming back.

I'll share more details on the bonemarrow transplant in my next post.

Thank you everyone for all your prayers and support.

Michele
