Construction prospects...
Rich’s disease has continued to progress, we have seen a few spikes and we have seen a few plateaus. Overall things have been steady and we know we are not within the "2-5 year life expectancy" statistic that is associated with ALS. We will soon be embarking on a major home renovation to make all spaces safe and accessible for a wheelchair. This will allow for a massive increase in quality of life for all of us. Rich's safety in our home is extremely important to me and his ability to do anything and everything with our kids is absolutely vital.
Coming off of a big fundraiser for Compassionate Care ALS, we are starting some fundraising of our own. Thank you SO MUCH for all of your efforts toward CCALS. Rich and I got to spend an amazing weekend at their retreat center in Cape Cod. This is one of the things that makes CCALS so incredible, their focus on quality of life. While Rich wasn't able to get down onto any sand, he got to enjoy every inch of the fully accessible retreat center. We also enjoyed a sunset from the car and I dipped my toes in the water!
We are working on details of what is to come, but have an amazing contractor nailed down (pun intended). The project is expected to begin sometime in October and we are currently sorting our way through the planning process. I knew that we would not be able to fund this project on our own, so I began reaching out to our local community. I contacted the Bedford Family Connection, which is an amazing group in Bedford that focus on connecting families in town. They host a variety of events, meet ups, book clubs, playgroups, and more! They will kindly be hosting our FIRST FUNDRAISER! It will be a live zoom cooking event, with a variety of raffle items up for grabs! This will be taking place on Sunday, September 13th at 3pm. See attached flyer for details on raffles and how to sign up. If you have questions, please reach out to me.
Beginning this process is a huge hurdle. Accepting help and money from others is not easily done and it still makes me feel uneasy. I have typed this entry time and time again, closed the window and closed my computer. This has been one of the hardest posts so far. I am continuing to work through these thoughts and feelings and appreciate any and all support. I am excited to share more information with you all as plans evolve on the project...and here I go officially hitting enter!
With love,
Leah
