It's interesting how having your Freedom taken away suddenly and without warning can have such a profound effect on you in ways you never even thought imaginable.....until you are faced with given a taste of that Freedom back. Then you want to have it as it washes over you like an ocean wave and consumes every part of your being.
I haven't been able to drive since the wreck. I haven't been able to do things independently, away from the house. for quite some time, specifically involving transportation. In a way, aside from the numerous medical appoitments I have been thrust into needing a ride for, I feel like a prisoner in my home. I am not complaining about the ongoing challenges. I am blessed to be alive to face the challenges I have been gifted with. I do however seek a quality of life above what I presently have.
MaryFreeBed submitted a claim to have this bike paid for, for me - to the insurance company, as this would help keep me from deconditioning further physically, mentally, ad emotionally. It would also give me the ability to get out of the house independently, do things outdoors with my children around our home, and build up my endurance to get further and further away from the house on my own. A taste of freedom I got in January 2015 when I visited the Terratrike Warehouse here in Grand Rapids, MI. I tried different bikes that worked with my limitations and limited range of motion with my right arm and other factors. I cried with elation and relief that I could feel that sense of independence again. It was a VERY emotional day.
Insurance DENIED THE CLAIM from MaryFreeBed. This stripped me of that sense of freedome TWICE. Then Lynn, my Recreational Therapist....she came through for me. I would have to find a way to put some money down towards the cost and MaryFreeBed would pick up the rest of it. I am hoping to raise 600.00 to put down towards the bike. The more I raise, the more monies from their "Fund" can be used for others in need as well.
They do this once a year - called "Bikes For The Rest of Us". Saturday April 25, 2015 my husband took me to get fitted for my helmet at MaryFreeBed. This was a monumental day as it was the Anniversary of one year with MaryFreeBed to the date.....I came there on April 25, 2014 broken with no glimpse of freedom or possibilities. All I had was the strong HOPE and vision of where I wanted to be and where I wanted to go overall. Here I am a year later. I am till learning about my injuries, and have had the best support in the Home and Community Program that was eventually offered to me in October 2014 after my surgery.
A taste of freedom. Spring is in the air. It's time to take a ride......Bikes need to be paid for and then will be delivered in June 2015. Anything you can do to help would be appreciated. Whether $5, $50, or $500......that is $5.00 more I can pay down to Terratrike and they can allot more of their funds to others, like me, who without these funds would not have their taste of Freedom too.

Looks like fun---I'll see what I can do!!
I cried as I taped the monumental occasion of Caren's first bike ride. Imagine, if you will, the feelings of seeing your child ride a bike for the first time. Whether they are 4 or 40, the joy you see registered on their face as they experience freedom - well, it is more priceless than a Kodak moment, more poignant than a Hallmark movie, and more touching than an AT & T commercial. I have seen Caren, through this journey, defeat death, learn to eat again, learn to walk again, learn to speak and make sense of numbers; and now, this opportunity for freedom - learning to ride a bike - again. By the way, it is true. You never forget how to ride a bike, sometimes you have to learn a NEW way of riding a bike! Prayer partners, please, let's support her in this endeavor. Caren, you can do this! You have overcome so much! Thank you God, for this beautiful, very brave daughter! Thank you for our prayer partners, and for the donations that will come in for this Terra Trike! Love always - Mom
