Obituary, Memorial and Memories

I meant to post this Monday, but somehow it escaped me. Korbin's Dad wrote the obituary. He didn't want it to be like all the other ones- he wanted it to be unique, like Korbin, and so it is.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 4:30 PM on Saturday, March 26, 2016 at Mt. Horeb Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor John Twiton officiating.  A gathering time and potluck dinner will follow the service in the church’s Fellowship Hall.  Visitation will be held from 12 noon – 4:00 pm on Saturday prior to the memorial at Mt. Horeb Evangelical Lutheran Church.  In lieu of flowers and plants, memorials to “The Berg Family” are preferred.

Korbin Alexander Berg, 39 years of age, passed away on March 20, 2016 after a valiant five year battle with cancer.  His smile and concern for those many friends, family and co-workers were there until his final breath.  He was born on March 30, 1976, to parents Ken and Deb, and met the love of his life, Diane, in college.  Of this love came Ellie and Erik, and they became the purpose of his life.  He was very close to his sisters Hilary and Dee, and his brothers Scott and Jason.  His passing will leave a large hole in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.  Korbin, Diane, Ellie, and Erik are members of Evangelical Lutheran Church, where they share faith, family and community.  His life was an inspiration to all.  Friend, father, husband, funny, courageous, compassionate, responsible, creative, hard-working; these are all words he will be remembered by.  Precious memories of his kindness and love will help those who loved him in the days, months, and years to come.  He will do fine in Heaven as long as he always remembers “righty-tighty, lefty-loosey.”

A heartfelt thanks to all the doctors and nurses who gave Korbin those five bonus years to share with his family, and to the caring staff at Agrace HospiceCare who lent comfort and compassion in his final days.

I spent a lot of time today looking through the many cards and notes we have collected since his brain surgery last April. He kept them next to the recliner in a basket from Christmas, along with all of the cards he got from his retirement, and a detailed list of thank you cards that may have never been sent out- so Thank You (if you didn't get one, which you may not have since he really liked to procrastinate...) I know he looked through them.  I started a new basket of cards from the prayer vigil basket Pastor John brought us. It can be overwhelming to read everything at once, but it feels really nice to look at a couple here and there, and I plan to save them so the kids can remember how loved their Dad was by so many people. They have definitely been enjoying getting the mail lately.

We wanted to find a way for anyone who would like to share memories of time with Korbin without making the memorial service last hours. I've sent up an e-mail address memoriesofkorbin@gmail.com for anyone who wants to share to send things to.  We'll put them together into a book for the kids and I, and the rest of the family to share.  If you ask me to, I'll share them on here for others to see too. There will be note paper at the potluck for you to write things down if you prefer to share that way.

Thank you for your kindness and support.

Diane, Ellie and Erik
