Resting Peacefully...

Wednesday night was a tough night- Korbin had some pain and we had a hard time managing it effectively at home, so Thursday evening we discussed it and decided that it would be a good idea to admit Korbin to Agrace. When we first admitted him for pain control to Meriter he made it very clear that he did not want to die in the hospital.  When we went to Agrace after that we were both so impressed with the facility, and especially the amazing nurses and doctors that he told me that if he had to go back there at the end, he was okay with that. I'm so glad that we did, because they were amazing with Korbin, and made his last days so much more comfortable that I could have at home.  [...]

The Waiting Game

I know I said “No news is good news” and that’s been pretty much true. When we decided to stop treatment Korbin said he wanted to be home, and have no more pain. Korbin is still at home, and his pain is being well managed by our wonderful doctors and nurses. He is ready to go, and we’re just waiting for his body to catch up with his mind. In the meantime we are keeping him very comfortable, and enjoying all the time we can with him.  We have his hospital bed in the living room, and we spend lots of time just being together as he goes between being alert and resting. He’s on some pretty strong pain medications and sleeps most of the time- but if we start talking about computer problems he usually chimes right in. He has great hearing![...]

Just keep swimming...

Hi, it's Di again.

The pain that we have been trying to resolve is being very stubborn. We were unable to transition him from IV meds to oral meds and adequately give him good rest at the hospital, so we decided to try the weekend at the hospice in-patient short-term care center. Here they are able to give him a pump with stronger painkillers, and we will use that to try to level out his pain. Hopefully he can go home with the pump and we will have nursing support from hospice.[...]

Happy Drugs! :)

Hi! It's Di. As Korbin said we did have a wonderful time in Florida, and I'd love to go back right now!

Korbin has been having some pain in his back and side for a few weeks now, and we were controlling it ok at home with various medications, however he has been needing more and more of some of them to keep it under control. Tuesday we had a follow-up appointment with Dr. Huie, and as we were getting ready to go we pretty much used all the "good stuff" we had and the pain was still there. So after talking to Dr. Huie, we admitted Korbin to the hospital to find better ways to control his pain. They gave him a button to push when he needs it, and he's resting so much better now! He got a good nights sleep last night, and starting today we'll wean him off the stuff he can only have in the hospital and find something for him to use at home.  He'll be there tonight for sure, and I'm not sure how soon he'll be home after that.  Hopefully by the weekend. [...]

Home again

It's good to be back home in snowy Wisconsin. :)  We had a great trip last week! The new (to us) Harry Potter stuff between the two parks at Universal was amazing and we even got to ride the Hogwarts Express.[...]

Quick Update (dictated by Korbin)

Sorry it’s been so long since I posted. I am still on a chemo break. My body has been dealing with fatigue and pain in my abdomen.

I finished up my last day at work and was treated to an amazing lunch and celebration from an awesome group of co-workers and friends. I’ve spent the last week resting and getting fluids.[...]

Popcorn, radiation and trees.

I met with my radiation doctor yesterday and we decided that we will treat the tumor on my T8 vertebrae but not do anything with the one on my T12 since it appears to be stable. This should help with the pain and leaving the T12 one alone will help preserve my bone marrow. (Areas receiving radiation treatment will no longer generate new marrow.)[...]

I liked last week better.

Last week was wonderful. We had a great Thanksgiving in Saint Louis and I had a good appetite. This week however has been a little rough. I had chemo on Monday and the side effects have hit harder than normal. It's Thursday and I'm still feeling kind of lousy. We also think that we've determined what is causing the pain on my left side. A closer look at my last CT scan showed two spots on my spine, one of which is right against the nerve bed, in line with where the pain is. What does this mean? Probably radiation on my spine. It sounds like a fairly easy target to treat. I had an MRI on Tuesday (while still connected to chemo...that was an adventure) and should hear back regarding a game plan within the next few days. Thanks for checking in, Korbin
