Out of the Hospital

When I got to the hospital this morning I could tell the chemo is taking its toll on Mike. He just looked so tired and weak. I HATE seeing him like this. It breaks my heart. He did say he ate a good breakfast, though. He really liked their French toast.

The team of doctors did their rounds and the lead doctor, Dr. Markovic, was really pleased to see how well he has been doing. He wished us good luck and told Mike not to screw things up. That got a laugh out of him, I'll always consider it a good day if Mike is still laughing. Even if it's just a little bit.

He finished the concoction bag and also the cytoxin bag (it's just a 1hr infusion) a little after 10. He was glad to get unhooked from everything. With his new found freedom, he decided to take a shower, but he asked to take a little nap before. That's how tired he was.

Our nurse was Brooke again, and she helped address any and all of our concerns with leaving and what to do if we had any problems. She really got to know Mike this week and did a great job easing his anxiety. She told him that he could call anytime today since she would be there until 7:30. He said he might call just to tell her he missed her. She said he better!

Once all the paperwork was done, we were armed with more chemo knowledge, got extras of masks, gloves, Picc line caps, and prescriptions were filled, we packed up and headed out around 3:00.

We switched to a hotel with a suite so that Mike had some room to move around. When we checked in, the clerk handed me a big gift bag. I was carrying it out to the car and a lady asked, "Oh is it your honeymoon?" I just smiled and said, "No, not exactly." This is real life, after the honeymoon phase. I love him a million times more than I did on our honeymoon, I can tell you that. Mike's favorite part of this room is the couch. He said it was so nice to just sit somewhere other than the hospital bed. I was just glad to take a nap laying beside him. I went out and got us some dinner and now we're (HE) is watching the Super Bowl. We've been getting pictures and videos of the kids tonight and it has lifted Mike's spirits a lot. Being away from the kids is equally the hardest part of all of this.

Tomorrow morning we go back to get his Neulasta shot and check his counts. Then we will countdown until Wednesday!

Thanks for all of the love, Friends. Seriously.

xoxo

Robin

You are in our prayers always, enjoy your little bit of "freedom." I'm sure you and your farm boy are itching to get back to real life and the kids. If you guys need a vacation when he's back to good health we will (hopefully) have a guest cabin in Montana you are more than welcome to use!! A little mountain view is pretty good medicine :) Love you!

One down...woo hoo! Robin, reading your posts is amazing. You guys have the best attitude and clearly have an amazing support system. I laughed to myself when reading that you picked a Frosty up for Mike. I distinctly remember the day that I made my husband hit the drive through at Wendy's after a treatment so that I could get a chocolate one myself :) You write so well. Thanks for sharing this experience.
