Feels Like Home, or Something Like That |4-25-16|

Today Mike had to get his labwork done and his PICC site bandage changed. Checked those items off the list and then went up to the 17th floor where Dr. Scalcini works in the Internal Medicine department. She sent us a card around Easter and told us that if we are ever back up there to stop and say hi to her. So we did. At first, the receptionist might have thought we were crazy. She asked, "So are you here for a medical visit, or just a friendly visit?" She seemed really hesitant when we said, "Just friendly! She told us to stop in." After an hour, she told us that our favorite doctor was running behind and maybe to come back later on, or the next day. No problem. We weren't trying to cause problems or anything, so we went and had lunch. During lunch Mike got a phone call from her office, and the woman said, "Dr. Scalcini wants to see you, so if you could come back, she gave instructions to pull her out of a room with a patient if you're here."

Can you believe that? THAT'S (part of) the reason we LOVE it up here, so much. That's why she is always running a little behind. She spends time with her patients. She genuinely cares about them.

So we went back later in the afternoon and her nurse came out and got us right away. Her name is Tammy and she feels like family, too. She said, "No tears from any of you!" I think she knows how much we like Dr. Scalcini (and perhaps how much Dr. Scalcini likes Mike)

Dr. Scalcini came right in and hugged us, asked about the kids, asked to see pictures of them, and asked all about how Mike is doing. She told him he's so handsome with his head shaved (now we're getting to the root of their connection... he IS handsome!) We visited for 10 or 15 minutes and then went on our way.

In that short amount of time, our day was turned around completely. Mike felt so good walking out of that office, he said, "That, alone, was worth the drive up here."

The rest of the evening has been uneventful. We've been lazy, and ordered pizza delivery to the hotel room. Living Large up here. :)

Tomorrow morning he goes in for the biopsy. We aren't sure when we will get the results from it, but I'm guessing it will be at least a week. I'm staying positive that this is giving him a little break from everything and hopefully he can continue to feel well enough to do some more enjoyable activities... like mowing the yard, or doing the dishes, even?!

As much as we love it up here, though, it's just not easy to be away from the kids. We spend an obscene amount of time oogling over our pictures and videos of them. How did we get so lucky?

XOXO

Robin

Im saying prayers for you guys! I can't wait until they get Mike's second diagnosis down and wipe that cancer out too. I'm so grateful that you have good connections with your medical team. Keep those positive attitudes. You are amazing people.

I can't agree more with the care you get up there. When they call you, it's the Drs themselves who call and that just amazes me. They are a wonderful group of people!
