9/14 Update
Fewer updates due to the fact that I have not been up to SJ in awhile and there have been no major changes. She did get her PEG tube out on Thursday (scheduling pushed it back to Thr) and continues to get stronger. She went on an outing today to Hobees for Breakfast. I admit, I'm a little jealous (we don't have a Hobees in SLO anymore). She is still struggling with her blood pressure and is trying new medications.
I've been getting questions about her mobility so I'll try to cover it here. She shattered the C6 neck vertebrae. (see Google stuff - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spinal_cord_injury). At SJ, they classified her as a C5 complete.
The goal in therapy is to get use of two additional vertebrae. In Shannon's case, she has started to develop use of her triceps but to this point that is it. She can move her wrists but has no use of her hands. If there is going to be improvement, it usually happens in the first six months but the spinal cord takes two years to completely heal. And no, she will probably never walk. Of course, there are always rare cases, but I'm choosing to deal with where we are rather than hoping on what might happen.
I hope that clears up some questions. If not, feel free to ask me others.
I'm heading up on Tuesday for training and will be coming back with Shannon on the next Tuesday. Only 10 more days and let me tell you, she is ready to come home.
