January 16th

This morning the Doctors reported that Brenda had slight improvement since being on the KCI RotoProne Therapeutic bed, however they reminded us that this is still a "wait and see" situation. She is not out of the danger yet. She is placed on her stomach for 6 hours and placed on her back for two hours, then rotated 60 degrees to the left and 60 degrees to right. At noon today the team placed her on her back and to do the dressing change, this will happen twice a day; noon and 8 p.m. Her urine output was at an acceptable rate and as long as that continues they will not use the 24 hour dialysis treatment. If you would like an understanding of the bed system she is using I suggest you search on the Internet for KCI RotoProne Therapy system and look at the PDF. Keep Praying![...]

January 15th

Today we were informed by Doctor Perry, that Brenda is back to day one. She currently has an infection. The moved her to Surgical ICU, room 4521 Zone C, so they can place her on the rotating bed. This will hopefully improve her condition. What we need is a consisten improvement in her breathing. While she is in the rotating bed the medications, breathing treatment, and dressing changes will continue. They may start a slow dialysis, this is a process in which they cycle the blood and remove the excess fluid. This would run 24 hours a day. If this does not work, we, the family, will need to decide on what to do next. At this point in time we need your prayers. We all got excited with her progress, and we forgot how fragile she is. God saved her in the begining, and he gave her enough strength to fight for this long. Brenda needs our prayers once more. Ask the Lord above for his guidance and love.[...]

January 13th & 14th

Sunday - No change in her status, still sedated so the Ventilator can do the work (large inhale - small exhale, this is the opposite of what we due normally). This how they are treating her ARDS (Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome). Respiratory Therapist is continuing treatment every 4 hours. She is still receiving medication for Fungal infection. They are still pulling fluids out of her body (push - pull). Her burns are healing. They did the dressing change at her bedside. Still receiving Family visitors only.[...]

January 11th and 12th

Friday - Brenda had a restful evening. The first thing she did was her rehab; legs, arms, and mouth. The Therapist assisted her in setting up. She was able to keep herself sitting up (off / on) for about 15 minutes. They are treating her for a fungal infection, yeast. She is on the ventilator in the Assist control mode. The Doctor could not insert the PEG, stomach tube feed, because she could not maintain a acceptable breathing rate. This was due to retintion of liquids in her body. She was sent back to the room. Once back in the they started a program to remove the fluids, push / pull (Albulmen and Lasix). They did this about 2 weeks ago. The liver number improved for the second day and at this time the Doctor does not believe this is a problem. She is resting tonight.[...]

January 8th, 9th and 10th

Tuesday - This morning Brenda did her Therapy, arms and legs. She got a special brace for her right foot that will stretch her foot backwards. She sat up in the stretch chair for about 2 hours. Her breathing has improved. The Doctor is treating her for an infection. His thinking is that this infection could be yeast, he is waiting on the culture results to verify. Her dressing changes were done by her bedside. She is on the ventilator and will be for the next couple of days, they want to build her strength back up. Her burn area is 95% HEALED at this time! The fluid on the lungs still remains the number ONE issue at this time. They did not change her in-line pic, that will probably happen Wednesday.[...]

Monday 1/07/13

Monday they decided that she probably has Acute Respiratory Distress. Doctor Perry, Plastic/Burn surgeon, and Doctor , lung specialist, consulted to determine the best course of action. Doctor Perry did a broncoscope to see if the Trach was source, it needed to be replaced. The trache was not the entire source of her breathing problems, but it was imperative that it was replaced. They removed a tube from her nose, as that could be a source of an infection. The medication will be admistatored by intervinsely. They scheduled the removal of inline pic but that was delayed until tomorrow and that is because it has to be done by a special group. Blood clots could be the source, legs and arms are clear, the lung has a small clot. There could be other locations. They are going to increase her Heperion dosage. She will continue on the Vent for the next couple of days. This afternoon they had her in the Stretch Chair for 2 hours. Tonight her breathing was improved but still has room for more improvement.[...]

Sunday 1/06/13

Sunday Brenda had a breathing problem during the night, shortness of breath. She continues on the Vent and she still has fluid on the lungs. Her dressing was changed at bedside this morning. Later in the day she was on the stretch table for 2.5 hours. They believe that this position will help her lungs. At this time the Doctors are not sure what is causing the fluid on the lungs. There are a few possibilities but they will meet tomorrow morning to develop a game plan to find the cause.

Saturday 1/05/13

Saturday they found Brenda very alert, she received her breathing treatments and was in the stretch chair for 2 hours. She had a trolly for cleaning and dressing change. She signaled to the staff that she wanted to wash her arms. They applied a very small amount of dressing and the doctor said her healing is progressing. She still has fluid in her lungs. The result of her lung culture is negative. They are going to keep her on antibiotics. They are on the watch for an infection and or pneumonia.
