Feb 12 - 2013 (9pm): Another surgery

Today Rich Keida entered the Mat-Su Regional Medical Center to have a colostomy reversal procedure accomplished, one more step in the long recovery process all related to the accident last July.    Jeannette and Sam were there all day, and the word from the "trenches" via Jeannette is:  'Rich came out of surgery at two thirty and is doing well. He is in recovery right now and will then go up to his room in about an hour.   Dr Senta told us that everything looked good.  There were some adhesions; parts of the small intestine stuck to each other.  These had to be separated - this is why the surgery took so long. He was pleased with the outcome tho and expects a full recovery. Rich will be in the hospital a minimum of seven days.--Hugs Jeannette'

As we all pray once again for a quick and complication free recovery for Rich, I am reminded of the 'art' of medicine as much as the science.  For the doctors its just another operation, but to me, the layman, it seems its more like another mini-miracle, part of the long process of putting "Humpty Dumpty back together again."   As far as I know, there should be no more surgeries for Rich, and so this procedure marks a huge line in the return to normalcy.   The odd thing to me as I visited there today was that the hospital seems to me to be all too familiar, and yet there is comfort too in knowing the routine, seeing the trusted medical staff doing their jobs, and knowing that real healing is now taking place.   - John
