Laura’s 9pm Saturday update

Moving forward, I may not update daily but tonight I will.

Friends and family were in full support all day. We slept in, ate breakfast casserole prepared by friends, and when my UGA friends arrived with doughnuts, we hopped on the Scout for an adventure with Bryan as our guide. We boated across the inlet, trampled over amputated starfish, trekked over tiny sand crabs, and ran through a mosquito-infested jungle in an attempt to reach the Atlantic. After 30 minutes and countless bites, even my friend dressed in long sleeves and pants (with platform wedges 😂) was ready to turn back. We raced back to the boat where our less-adventurous friend waited with water and bug spray. Omg, how Liza must’ve laughed at us![...]

Laura’s 10pm Friday update

https://www.fftc.org/Liza_and_Edie_Burke_Fund
Quite a day. After a full night/break of day, the house was quiet for a few hours.
We awakened to partly cloudy skies and, seeing dolphins in the inlet, Bryan, Jack, Elli, and I grabbed Liza's Uncle Mike and set off on Bryan's Scout. The water was teaming with life: numerous dolphin pods with youngsters surfaced again and again as we putted through the inlet.
I responded to a few questions from the compassionate The Daily Mail reporter and returned to the house to answer a call from the Lions Eye. Evidently Liza's eyes might qualify for donation - a bright spot in this story. We'll know for sure tomorrow 🤞
Then while others went on a guided dolphin tour with our inlet neighbor, I got to work on Liza's obituary and later finalized the educational fund to be established in Liza and Edie's names.
This evening our whole group united on the dock under the sunset for cocktails, yacht rock, and conversation followed by an island walkabout with my UGA friends. As this surreal day comes to a close, I've just listened to a version of Valerie, the song Liza belted out wholeheartedly at my wedding a year and a half ago. I was reminded to stop, take a full breath, and take note of the fullness and beauty that surrounds me... and then get with the fun.
Thank you, Liza, for your spirit that will forever inspire me![...]

Laura’s 9:30am Friday update

It is with both relief and belief that I share Liza’s passing at around 2:20 last night. Liza has now been reunited with her sister and they are making up for lost time!
After the movie ended, Bryan and I went upstairs to sleep while Jack slept hand in hand with his sister. Once he fell asleep and the only eyes on Liza were those of her “other mother”, Liza took a final breath, sighed, and transitioned into the next realm. Beane, the dog quickly sensed it and was downstairs while I was being awakened.
After Hospice was called, we dressed Liza in colorful pajamas, gifted by her boyfriend’s mother and Jack’s girlfriend, Elli, braided her hair. Liza’s dad, uncle, and a few of my UGA friends came in to say their goodbyes.

Celebrations of Liza’s big energy are in the planning stages: one held by her friends will be in Athens and another at a later date in her hometown of Asheville.
We’re also setting up a fund at the Foundation of the Carolinas in Liza (and Edie’s) names for educational purposes. Some will go directly to an endowment at the University of Georgia, and we hope to direct some funds to further the education of Liza’s students in San Pancho, Mexico.
More details will follow.

Laura’s 9pm Thursday update

It’s been a dramatic day on the inlet, starting with Liza’s raspy, shallow breathing. Around the same time that I spotted two manatees passing near the dock, Hospice arrived. Liza’s oxygen saturations had dropped below 80. It was determined to increase the frequency and dosage of her meds. My friend, Charlotte generously took over the role of chief pharmacist and Liza’s breathing calmed. My college friends rolled in just in time to see dolphins and a snacking sea turtle. Later, new Burke family members blew in with an afternoon thunderstorm. They flooded Liza with love as Charlotte and Jack kept Liza peaceful. Eventually the party moved next door to watch the NFL draft before several of us now watch another Liza favorite, Interstellar, a movie about time travel and a search for a new planet in order to save humanity.
As we pray for Liza tonight, a quote from the movie (also a poem) that seems to reflect Liza’s enduring spirit: “Do not go gentle into that good night.”
Peace to you, Liza, my love!

Laura’s 9:30pm Wednesday update

I doubt Mother Nature gets much more generous than she did today… a morning visit off the dock by a few passing dolphins and later sea turtles. Liza’s heartbeat was rapid this morning but it didn’t stop her from wiggling her toes for the hospice workers, showing off her white teeth when complimented, and scrunching her nose etc to let us know she’s listening. She inspires us hourly.
Lots of laughs and tears were shared on and by her bed while we told stories (endless headstands as a preschooler, surfing and zip lining in Costa Rica, high school parties, sky diving, etc) and looked through old photos on our phones.[...]

Laura’s 9:30pm Tuesday update

Another beautiful day as Liza brought our little crew closer together enabling us to each play a role in her care. We took turns repositioning, preparing and delivering meds, suctioning, and telling stories, and in response Liza shared her love through squints and facial gestures.
The inlet was equally abundant: sea turtles, dolphins, sailboats, and a bonnet head shark on Jack's line.
In keeping with the theme, tonight's big screen features a favorite from Liza's middle school years: Aquamarine.[...]

Laura’s 9pm Monday update

Temperatures were cool on the inlet today so we stayed indoors with Liza. Early, our support crew swapped out our spirit-friendly caregiver for Liza's "other-mother". Then the Athens army gave their individual goodbyes between donning Liza's signature beaded orange dress... which looked stunning on all the girls but not so much on her boyfriend😂! I will be the facilitator of the Traveling Dress as it attends future events wrapping Liza's friends with her energy and spirit. The big treat of today was a short visit from her cat, Pete. Fortunately he squeezed in a short snuggle somewhere between hiding beneath a pillow and hiding in the bathroom. Tonight's big event: another Liza favorite: Talladega Nights.[...]

Laura’s 10pm Sunday update

After a windy day, we capped off our weekend with a low-country boil in Liza’s honor, which included Liza’s Athens posse and steadfast boyfriend along with family and my personal support crew. As I write, my spirit-friendly caregiver has enlisted Liza’s grandparents to assist with pressure-point therapy to help ease Liza’s discomfort. Her Athens friends will stay with her tonight in one last Liza-inspired sleepover. The night nurse has no idea what awaits.[...]

Laura’s 9pm Saturday update

Starting this as Tim McGraw’s Live Like You Were Dying plays. The coincidence is not lost on me.
This morning I snuck in bed with Liza for a couple hours and was awakened after a dream - one that I remembered (which is rare). In it, a woman was behind me and suddenly and unexpectedly I fell backwards and was swept into her arms. I attempted to tell Bryan and my friend who watched I loved them as I was whisked into a pulsing surge. I was on my way to the next journey, peacefully. Then everything was still and I heard the sounds of our house and felt Liza on my side. Perhaps it was the universe reminding me of the potential that awaits us.[...]
