Laura’s 10:00am Sunday update

Our arrival in Athens Thursday evening was almost shocking: the usual excitement I feel in anticipation of adventures that Liza had planned was replaced by nothingness and dread of how I would cope with what was ahead. Fortunately friends were waiting, prepared to soak up some of my grief. After dinner we met up with Liza’s friends at the bar where she worked for several years, her late-night home away from home.
Friday was even tougher, but again friends and family pulled me through. I delivered the Big Liza Energy trophy to the KD house to use as motivation for kindness, encouragement, and authenticity during the sorority’s recruitment season. We went through Liza’s belongings in the house that she shared with four roommates for the last two years. After sorting through, FaceTiming with her bestie from Asheville, and packing up anything we thought we might use, I laid on her bed and cried. At night the University of Georgia brought its best game (and we know that’s damn good!) to our family. Jere Morehead, the University’s president, conveyed Liza’s diploma with majors in Management and International Business. We were taken to a spacious box above the 50 yard line at Sanford Stadium. Below, we could make out Liza’s best friends who had slipped in late and were taking their seats in the rear. In memory of Liza, her good friend and co-worker, Mitcham, called the dogs to the crowd in hopes that those on the field might hear. Then, as the ceremony was about to begin, we heard the fight chant arising from the field, clearly originating from the back.
After speeches were made and students were honored, degrees were ready to be conferred. Jere Morehead asked for a moment of silence in Liza’s memory. The stadium was completely still and quiet. Then he announced that Liza’s family and friends were in the audience. The students and so many in attendance stood and looked our way and clapped. I was focused on the back of the field waving and fist-pumping to Liza’s friends who I was there to celebrate as Liza would’ve wanted. It was awesome.
Yesterday her housemates and fellow KD neighbors hosted a bash for friends and family in their backyards. We gave LiveLikeLiza shirts and hats to her besties, drank what will likely become the official “Tranquil-Liza”, sang Valerie, and took pictures. I was once again reminded that Liza picked her friends well.
Today is the final event in Athens, a Celebration of Liza, at Terrapin Brewing that her boyfriend Leighton has prepared. I go back to the message/insistence she and Edie gave me a few days after Liza’s death: this earthly lifetime is short so enjoy it: we’ll see you soon enough. May I deliver on that for my girls this Mothers Day![...]

Laura’s 3pm Wednesday update

It’s the first moment that I’ve been fully alone since arriving at the inlet. Bryan is at work and Jack and Elli are at the grocery. Liza’s dad and uncle are at the beach, and our final guests left today. I find myself incredibly grateful for the love and support and beauty that has surrounded us. So much has been accomplished in the last few days to insure that, in Athens and in Asheville, Liza will be remembered with the same love and zest for life that she carried in her lifetime - and undoubtedly still evokes in the next realm. Thank you to ALL who are making that possible![...]

Laura’s 10am update

It was another beautiful morning here witnessing the sun rise over the lowest tide I’ve seen yet. This afternoon while Jack and Bryan go off-shore fishing, I’ll be FaceTiming with a dear friend and former neighbor - and the same person who ran with the ball following Edie’s death - to stage the venue for Liza’s Asheville Extravaganza. Soon, Jack and Liza’s friends will be filling in the planning gaps.
Even though Saturday was windy and chilly, it was perfect for installing a header at our new house in town! The support that showed up to get us over that hurdle was incredible; a job that’s been on hold since early March was complete in two hours. It also presented me with a morsel of excitement over making the new house something special as I adjust to life without Liza’s daily reports.
And speaking of reports, I’m pretty sure that she and Edie visited me last week as I attempted to nap. A voice kept repeating to me “this (earthly) life is short, like a blip, so make the most of it/enjoy it… you will be here soon enough and we’ll be waiting”. The voice was insistent and it wasn’t until I either repeated it - or felt like I had repeated it - aloud that it stopped. It was like a reminder to me of something that I’d already thought: Edie’s gift to me was a special bond with Liza and now Liza’s offering me the same opportunity with Jack (and Elli). What better way to fill the void!

Laura’s 8am Saturday update

Lots has been accomplished since my last posting. I created a LiveLikeLiza logo and ordered T-shirts and hats to share with Liza’s friends in Athens. This run of shirts will be extra special because it also includes artwork by her friend and fellow KD. Additionally. with the help of friends, I’ve secured a beautiful venue in Asheville for Liza’s Extravaganza on June 3rd.     Meanwhile the inlet has been very generous. Dolphins have been busy, and I do mean “busy” and gloriously swimming about. And a very mature sea turtle was spotted looking our direction and peaking his head in and out of the water. Yesterday’s Cinco de Mayo sunrise was gorgeous and had me up in time for a fantastic yoga class with Jack’s girlfriend. In the evening, our crew was joined by two Jacksonville friends and we forgot to watch the sunset. Instead we caught up and tested numerous renditions of the future cocktail sensation, the “tranquil-Liza.” However we didn’t miss the sky at night: we sat in awe by the fire pit as the full moon broke through the clouds over the water in all its majesty.      [...]

Laura’s 9am Thursday update

This morning I said good-bye to a steadfast Asheville friend and her husband. They, like others, have spent many days in Florida over the last two months supporting Liza and her family and friends. Meanwhile two other friends have rolled in to transition me through these difficult weeks without Liza’s daily phone calls and Snapchat reports. Luckily for me throughout this “fuckastrophy” (as a friend referred to it recently), I have always had Jack and Bryan nearby, not to mention the timely love from Elli and Beane.[...]

Laura’s 9:30 Tuesday update

It’s been 15 years since Edie left us on a beautiful spring morning in Asheville.
Today was equally lovely on the inlet but, aside from a morning walk with my sister, I spent the day inside. Thanks to the efforts of many friends, we may finally be close to securing a date and venue for Liza’s celebration of life.[...]

Laura’s 10pm Sunday update

I hadn’t planned to update today but here I am with a report.
Today Liza’s “other mother” had to return to the mountains, and several of the Burke family along with my UGA friends left the inlet. But before everyone left, we toured St Augustine, raced the drawbridge, and danced unabashedly amongst strangers #LiveLikeLiza[...]
