One step at a time

From George (Bob's son in law):

I stopped by to visit Bob on my way home. He had a long day but he was in good spirits. Today he had multiple specialists and nurses checking on his progress. As Nikki said below he was able to move short distances. He was able to communicate better than when I saw him Sunday. [...]

Room with a view

Posted by Nikki -

Today Bob was moved out of the ICU into a new room at the same hospital - considered a step-down unit.  I haven't seen the new room yet, however, I'm told that it's much larger and nicer than the ICU room, and has a view of the water.  He's up and able to walk short distances with the use of a walker.  Also, sitting in a chair seems to be a nice break from laying in the hospital bed.[...]

Food from the ICU

The good news is that Bob passed the swallowing test and is currently cleared for pureed foods.  The food of choice when I arrived the other day - applesauce, chocolate ice cream and lemonade.  Chocolate ice cream has been the biggest hit so far.[...]

From Facebook

From Jeff (posted on Saturday) -

Just wrapped of breakfast with dad this morning, he's eating and drinking plenty of fluids on his own (mostly).

He's talking and holding conversation, and very happy the hospital has ESPN

Hopefully we'll be transferred out of ICU to another unit today.

Results as the day goes on.

Perspective

They say perspective is in the eye of the beholder.  Wait.....that's beauty.  But whatever, it makes sense in this instance.

Its been a great day for the family members and care team at the hospital. Getting the tube out was great!  Even better is he's talking, albeit very hoarsely, and able to communicate with us.  We remain hopeful.  We are all doing happy dances in our minds.   [...]

The "Old Grizzled Veteran"

Over the past week and a half, we've encountered lots of nurses - they generally work a 12 hour shift - 7 to 7, and work for 3 days, then have a few days off.  We've had some favorites and some that aren't quite as awesome....but, overall we've been happy with the nurses and our staff interactions.[...]

Sports to the rescue

From Nikki and George:

On Thursday night, August 28th, George and I spent the evening with dad at the hospital watching football.  As Bob became more alert, George decided that he must be REALLY bored, which is a fair assessment.  The ICU is filled with beeping, alarms, respirator sounds, etc., and imagine being in bed, not being able to communicate, move or get away from these.  We talked to the nurse who gave approval to our TV plan.[...]

The story

On Tuesday, August 19th, Bob was involved in a boating accident and experienced a near drowning incident.  He's currently in the ICU at Tacoma General Hospital.  He remains on a respirator and is heavily sedated.  He is receiving good care from the nurses and doctors, and we remain hopeful for a journey to full recovery.[...]
